So how many of you have had to take Coaching Principles Test? Here in California we have to take and passed the ASEP National Coaching Principles Test and our CIF Rules test now in order to get paid. We did the test as a one day in service. The course might have been one of the biggest wastes of time I have ever been put through by the educational system. All of our walk ons had to do it first, which makes more sense since these guys are not teachers, but the kicker is the cost of the class at $180 which is supplemented by the district so we only have to pay $65 each walk on (this is BS). This is a total CYA deal and someone is making great money doing it. The best part is I go through this deal and the district can't find my paper work (which I have) and might try to deduct some of my stipend!

I had to do it here in Tennessee as a non-faculty coach. It was a 2 day deal for us. The school picked up the cost for it though.

Did it last year Tec. ON A SUNDAY!!!! Agreed. Waste of time. The word is this test is going national and will filter down to anyone who wants to coach. I'm talking youth leagues as well. You thought it was hard to find volunteers to coach your little kids......now you'll have to do that to because you'll be the only one certified (not that you wouldn't want to coach your little guys/girls anyway). One of those "you only have to take this once". I remember being certified to coach...like in 1991 and told that was all I had to do to become a certified coach. I'm sure in another 10 years they'll say this "certification" needs to be done again. Hey Tec. Beats SDAIE training huh? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ? with the rise of non certified teachers being coaches I feel there has to be some thing. so many schools have gone to off campus coaches to combat the loss of on staff coaches.
personally, I believe all coaches should be on staff but I know that is a pipe dream. I know at your smaller schools many of the coaching staffs are teachers. however at the bigger schools with the amount of choice inregards to sports you see so many off campus coaches.

i did it this august, it was 75 for us. total waste of a saturday and 75 bucks.

I had to take the test in Orange County, CA and found it to be a waste of time and a bunch of crap. Intent was good but reality wasn't. The only saving grace, it was paid for by the district. We also need CPR and FA, also paid for by the district.

I coach at a Catholic High School in Ohio, we are required to take a 4 hour "Protecting the Youth" seminar...basically telling us not to shower with our players, and how to avoid being put in questionable situations. All common sense stuff. Have to CYA these days I guess

The list of what we have to have each year as coaches is ridiculous. I found the ASEP testing stuff to be a huge waste of time being a teacher. If you don't know the common sense stuff then you should be fired.

being in CA we had to do it as well, the textbook has some decent stuff in it, but it is totally CYA. if you aren't the one making the rules you have to play by thiers.

Wow this is interesting....Of course I coach youth football, but I didn't take any kind of test or anything. It was more like "can you breathe, and do you know what football is?".
