Here's a question that I posted on TOC foolishly hoping for a serious answer. I think there's a better chance of getting straight responses here.
After reading some of the posts here about summer workouts taking too much time away from players and coaches I got curious about how long your workouts are. We lift and run from 6-8 on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. We'll also participate in maybe one 7-on-7 each summer. I was wondering how that compares with what others do.

our strength and conditiong camp was mtwt, from 8 to 10
hour lifting, hour running/outside stuff
our kids also did 7on7
we also had an open weightroom mwthursday for a couple of hours
the kids came and worked hard some went on vacations, and some took a few days off after they told us
it's all good with our staff, we understand that kids need some time off, hell, we need some time off
as long as they are responsible about it and let us know what is going on and stay in shape they will be fine
the ones that didn't do anything this summer (not the kids working their ass off hauling hay/ meat packing etc.) but the ones that just sat in the ac and played nintendo and ate bon bons
well, those kids are gonna hurt when august rolls around

as for the coaches signing up, we just kind of did it
when I couldn't be there, someone else was when they couldn't then I was, or someone else was
we all just communicated with each other
summer is the time to get some things done around the house and with vehicles/doctors/dentists, all the crap you can't really do during the school year or in season

We usually give them 1-2 weeks off right after school gets out. We will open the weight room for voluntary workouts. Once the mandatory period starts you have are required to be there everyday (MWF - weights, TTH - run, agilities, plyo's, etc). If you miss you have a make up (for any reason). You are expected to comunicate with us when you are going on vacation, etc. You still have make ups though. You have to finish all your make ups before you are allowed to play in a game (make ups are after practice).
Just like tog, coaches will have to miss but there is always at least 2-4 coaches there on a given day.
We try to recognize individuals who don't miss a single day of summer workouts once practice begins.
If you continually miss without comunicating you'll let go from the team.

Varsity/JV - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 7AM-9AM
Freshman - same days but 6PM-8PM
Average day lookslike this:
1. Dynamic Stretch 2. Agility Ladders 3. Abs 4. Bigger Faster Stronger Workout (2 core lifts, 2 auxillary) 5.Agility stations (we usually run 3-4 stations and vary the stations) 6. Sprint/Conditioning Running (Varies from 220 yds, 150, 100, 40, 20).
Two good weight room rules we got going this year are: if you are not lifting or spotting, you are doing dot drills, jumping rope, or doing more abs AND you only leave the weight room to get a drink when you go to the auxillary station. Keeps the little "chat groups" from forming and the kids who walk down the hall and get a drink every three minutes and get nothing done.

This is not TOC by the way Yeah, that's why I posted it here when I really wanted an answer. There were some posts over there about summer workouts taking too much time away from kids, family time away from coaches (without pay, and what-not. As you can see from my initial post, all we ask is 6 hours a week with a couple very optional 7-on-7s. Most coaches take a week for a vacation and, if something comes up, just have to call the boss. It's the same for kids- if they have to miss, we just ask that they call. I've never been paid for summer conditioning and neither has anybody on the staff. With all the complaining over there I wanted to compare our program with others. I certainly don't consider ours to be a major burden.

We go 9-11 T-W-Th. this year we'll go for 8 weeks. That includes a week after exams and a week off before practice starts. Is there anyway to get more kids in? Our team is tiny, 25-30, but our school is small. However, we only get 13 maybe per workout. I have closed it b/c there were only 2 kids there. Any ideas to get participation up? We have a conditioning test, and those who make 21 of the 24 workouts are exempt, but we'll only have 3 athletes exempt.

I too am at a small school. We've been fortunate with off season participation for many years...it hasn't always been that way. We have a 12 minute run they have to complete to play. We do this after the first practice, and after every practice thereafter until they make it. DBs 10 laps, LBs 9, DL 8...each time they run it we reduce it by 1/2 lap (this ensures no one will make it the first few times). If they attend 80% of the workouts off season, they can skip the 12 min. run. No one has done the run in years. Some have decided to not go out because of this, but we really wouldn't want them anyway. Another thing that has helped is we have the captains run conditioning 1 day a week (we go 4 days each week for 10 weeks). The captain's day is kind of fun... after we lift we go to the pool and water run/play water basketball, or we lift and then play dodgeball for 45 minutes. Our seniors have a lot to do with our participation...I meet with them every two weeks starting in March until the summer to explain their role in the program (which includes conditioning). They have a lot of pride in the program and take it seriously...and that helps a lot. Sometimes the younger guys think the coaches are picking on them and don't listen...but they will listen to the older players... so it really helpes to get them on board with what you want done.

senatorblutarsky, what you have sounds great. the problem i've seen with us is the lack of upperclassmen at workouts. Getting the younger kids in isn't much of a problem, b/c I think the parents see it as something for their kids to do to get out of the house. The biggest thing i'm noticing is that once our kids get their driver's license they are nowhere to be seen. Summer jobs seem to take priority. I need to find a better way to get buy in from the upper classmen. I really don't think that they connect work in the off season to success in season.

Mikell, it's too late for this year but next year you may want to talk to the upperclassmen before school gets out about when they think is the best time to work out. Maybe the time that you picked for the workout isn't best for them. Just a thought.

Phantom, I have considered that time might be a problem. the idea of having the workouts at night, 6-8, is starting to appeal to me. I think we might be able to get more there at that time. Concerning talking to the upperclassmen, I have. They make no inclination to one time or another. Phantom, you know that our school doesn't have a history of success in football, and that's contributing to the attitude to summer workouts and football in general. You're right about the kids not out chopping cotton, heck if they were, i would applaud, but like you said that ain't the problem.thanks for the ideas guys.
