We are having issues with our JH coaching. Nobody has done anything wrong, it’s just that we only have 1 person who wants to do it and they are only 20. Needless to say the AD doesn’t think that is only enough to be by himself (I wouldn’t want him by himself no matter his age. Too much responsibility).
I was wondering, do any of you HS coaches practice with your JH teams.
If not do you / can you practice on the same field?
Thanks for any advice!

Our JH is on a separate field but it's right next to our practice field. It'd be difficult to practice on the same field because you wouldn't have much room and you'd tear up the grass quickly.

We did this past year because its a cluster fuk around here and we are a small school. Our practice structure allows us to run a practice quickly with a larger team so we brought them back after school for practice. Obviously we didn't have the jr high vs the Sr high but they were able to get reps

I was at a small k-12 once that at times would have the jh and hs share the field for practice, but this crossover share time was only once a week and for only maybe an hour at most. Not to mention turf field so field wasnt ruined.
Hs was about 35 kids total anyhow, so we were able to get by with half a field just fine. That being written, 20 is young to handle that many jh kids and actually get work done, not impossible though- just gotta be hyper organized and well planned out.

I was HC at a tiny school that had the exact same issue. We did as much together as possible and then split for team and any contact periods. They did blocking, tackling, and Indi periods together (obviously partnered appropriately), but they got Varsity coaching during drills. They were also with us during install and X & O periods to learn the same schemes. Then their coach would take them to the side field to run plays. Worked out pretty well for us

I wouldn’t have enjoyed this, but a team in our area solved a similar problem by having the JH practice in the morning. The one JH coach was there and then the HS coaches would rotate days to help the JH. Small school that had problems getting coaches. They kind of liked it because they knew the JH team was learning the same skills and drills and schemes they would be using in HS

"...did as much together as possible and then split for team and any contact periods." This is how we do it...
