how much of your offensive philosphy is dictated by the defense you have? or the defensive philosphy you have?

I hate when a team takes the ball and jams it up our arses...yknow, 14 play drives where you just cant stop them....thats the type of offense we run and the type of thing we wont allow on defense. we try to force big plays, turnovers, mistakes, disrupt when we are on defense. bend but dont break has its place but its a killer to morale. giving up a big play stinks for sure, but i love high risk, high reward defense and a ball control (ball hog) offense. at the end of the season i expect to lead the league in turnover differential and time of posession. if that happens, i know we had a good year.

I believe in keeping our defense on the sideline so we like to control the clock and hang on to the ball. If we had a better D I might consider taking more risks on offense but I play field position and time of possession/total plays. Obviously this plan is not fool-proof but it had kept us in some games.

hmmm let me think about this....
our HC was teh OC too. We averaged over 280 yards passing/game, and less than 30 yds rushing/game; we also averaged 5 interceptions and 1 fumble lost per game.
as the DC i was faced with having to run a 'hat read' D-line, only allwoed to talk to the positions i coached (WR and DBs) and not the whole defense and we had troubles stopping "down yout throat rushing " teams and playing with and average opponent field postion of OUR 47 yd line.
Hopefully, the HC will let me use my defensive philosophy and actually let me run the defense. That would be a big help.

From what I've seen the last few years playing good "D" and running the football can win games but can also cost you your job.People just don't appreciate that style of football anymore.I have seen some coaches make the playoffs against teams they have no buisness playing with and get blasted from the stands the entire season. And the first year they don't get in it's because of the offense and they are reassigned. We had some really good players in 2002 and 2003 on offense and scored alot of points but did not win because we couldn't stop anybody and nothing was said.Know we are winning by playing "D" and running the football and we are the worst coaches in texas.I truly think todays fans would rather lose 42-38 than win 10-7.

i would prefer to have the ability to run the defense as i need to based upon the personel wee have and not a scheme. Our kids on the DL were not that big, very average speed, but need to have a simplified system (I have always beleived that if a player couldn't understand something it was the coach's responsibility to simplify it down to a point were the player could learn

play smart, sound football
let that dictate EVERYTHING you do......
what is that???
defense: be gap sound, know how to line up vs all formations, tackle. don't give up the "big" play.
offense: fundamentally sound. goal is NOT to score but to MOVE THE STICKS. think in terms of gaining something positive rather than in terms of 'taking it to the house'.

Good insight there ,cookie! Its a mindset and its contagious! There's still nothing like a 7-6 nailbiter to me but i'd settle for 70-6
