We are looking at having a senior camping trip with the coaching staff this summer (pending covid stuff this summer). We would be going to a lake in area. Fishing/tubing/etc... Outside of those activities... I am trying to find other ideas that some of you have used before with these kinds of events. We want it to be a special time for the kids where we can disconnect (no phones for players) and have a good time. Thanks guys!

You could pack some cleats for the campfire.

You could pack some cleats for the campfire. Early candidate for Post of the Year.

After a couple of weeks of summer practice (helmets but no pads/contact), we take our entire team (school busses) to a youth camp site that is about a 2 hour drive away. (Boosters pay for it) We continue to rep our offense we have already installed and add to it as much as they can handle. We have defensive sessions, too.
We arrive in the late morning and unpack and settle in to our cabins (like church camp or 4-H camp). The camp cooks prepare lunch followed by a couple hours of free time to participate in the activities available at the camp including swimming and fishing. Then Practice #1.
I'm not going to go through the entire agenda but we get in several practices that are teaching sessions and the kids have plenty of time for fun activities. The camp counselors have several activities they know the kids will enjoy. We have a campfire one evening, too.
On Day 3, the kids eat breakfast then have a 4-team kickball tournament before packing up and loading up on the busses when they arrive. It's very competitive. The kids talk about the memories from this camp all the time. Activities help build commrodery, friendships, and teamwork, etc. And we install more offense/defense and the kids are all in.

Now this is back in the day when I coached in Idaho, there was a team in our conference that always did one game on the other side of the state where they went camping and hunting/fishing that weekend of the game. Games were usually Saturdays so they left early Friday morning and got camp set up.

You are going on a camping trip, so make it a camping trip. I always begged the 3 HC's I worked for to do something like this as a way to reward seniors for sticking with the program. Also, I wanted a stipulation it had to be someone who had been with the team for more at least two seasons (to keep turds from showing up for one season and getting in on the fun). Look into some place with zip lining or stuff like that. I would be for making everything competitive though. So if you are fishing, make it a tourny. Volleyball, any thing to compete...just don't make it a practice away from home.

At a school I was at a couple years ago, they have camp at their school. The kids turn one side of the gym into a tent city. They bring air mattresses and mini fridges and tvs and xbox etc. They have extension cords going everywhere. Then they practice... They do it for a week. I think a week is long but they wake them up for late night or early morning runs or workout times. Will have class time etc. Its pretty cool ill try to find a picture of the tent city.

"Burn it"
Around the fire start with some easy questions as the athletes get to really know one another. As you progress, give each kid paper and pencil and start asking some deeper self-reflection questions. Let them know that this is for their eyes only.
Frame additional questions by any means that will fit your philosophy and agenda. At the close of the initiative, athletes will burn their responses.
You can have them simply toss them in or have everyone repeat a mantra or point of emphasis for your weekend.

I couldn't open them but it might just be my phone (Galaxy 10) or Internet provider.
