Hey guys anyone here run a morning practice in season? If so how long do you practice for & when in the week do you do it? One year we made the semifinals and the HC held practice at 6am so the kids could at least attend practices for winter sports if they chose to. We went in the morning Tues, Wed, Thur (game was Sat). When I was a HC we always went in the morning on Mondays off for holidays. I let the kids vote on it and they always wanted to go early to have the day off. Usually 8am, done by 10.

We would sometimes have Thursday practice in the morning. It was a walkthrough and only lasted 45 minutes. Since it was already something different we would have it in front of the school. A different atmosphere - kids liked having the afternoon off and it gave the players an extra 8 hours to recover before Friday’s game.

"If" we play in March with our limited (read no) "pre-season" I was thinking of having a morning practice for an hour to do a walk through and specials, at least for the first week.

Hey guys anyone here run a morning practice in season? If so how long do you practice for & when in the week do you do it? A buddy of mine went to a school that practices everyday in the morning, but they have football class so they don't have to be there hours before school starts.

Hey guys anyone here run a morning practice in season? If so how long do you practice for & when in the week do you do it? Without expressing an opinion either way: 1. How early? If it's before sunrise will you be able to practice under lights? 2. How close is your practice field to a residential neighborhood. If it's close, will the neighbors object to stadium lights, whistles, and general practice noise early in the AM? 3. Can all of your kids get there? 4. Can all of your coaches be there? A plus: It forces you to stick to a schedule. School starts when it starts so there won't be much, "Run it again".

I’m not sure we’d get all coaches, for sure we get all kids. Our challenge is “highly academic school we are limited in time after school bc of parents. Our parent group wants the kids at home for homework & tutors. We practice 120-130min a day and our parents already think it’s too long” I’m looking for creative ways to tack some into the morning and then some after school. The thought of a morning was maybe we do film & walk through then practice after school.

Can kids that need treatment prior to practice get it? if people tape ankles or anything like that, can that get done?

We have done it occasionally due to weather (heat index or storms). Usually on the field at 5:30 and off the field at 7:00. I like it because it is a nice change of pace that can break up the monotony. I also liked it because it forced us to get keep it short and get the kids in and out in a short period of time.
The kids seem to like it as well although we had one week this year where the heat index forced us to go 4 straight days at 5:30 and the "newness" had worn off by the last day.
We only had one kid that had an issue getting there and 2 kids that had a "zero hour" class that posed a problem. We always made sure that our trainer could be there and also made sure our parents had plenty of a time to make arrangements.
I personally would like for us to go to a thursday a.m. walkthrough during the season to allow for more recovery time for our kids.

IMO - I would strongly disagree with those coaches thinking of having practice both before and after school. I would think that would burn out everybody pretty quick.
when I was an assistant basketball coach we did that one year before the season started. I hated it and more importantly the kids hated and eventually the parents hated it. Head coach said, in retrospect, that it was a bad idea.

The reason why we would consider it is because we haven't played football in a long time. I was told our first day as a full team might be the first day of official practice. If that is the case we have a lot to do before our first game 13 days later. We would only do it for a week.

We have a school close to us that does morning practice on Thursday.
Mainly special teams and walk through. 60-75 minutes.
They tell all players at beginning of camp to schedule all doctor, dentist, orthodontist, hair cuts, etc..... On Thursdays.
They love it.

We only did it once and the afternoon session was not good.

We do our Thursday practice before school - we also start much later that most high schools so we start at 7:00 am and it goes for about 45 mins so it's not terribly early.
After school Thursday is study for those that are required to be there. All others have the afternoon off. I can see reasons for both ways, but this is what works for us.
