If you were fired, how did/would you handle end of year awards? Obviously no banquet in this COVID era, but how would distribute awards if you did them?

Same as always, be classy and remember its about the kids. Don't even mention you not being there next year, even if its the elephant in the room.

I worked in a program where the HC was fired - he was a great football mind but a terrible administrator which led to his downfall. Getting canned really took it out of him and he ended up not having a banquet or giving out awards. When asked about it he would say, "Yeah, I'm working on it" and delay after delay until it was obvious there was never going to be a banquet at all. It really left a bad taste in the mouths of everybody - players, their families and even the AC's. When it became clear that the HC wasn't going to do anything a couple of the AC's got together and gave out awards. We brought food and awards to the school during lunch and did a little ceremony on the senior patio. It ended up being a lot of fun for the kids - a lot of the non-football players stood around and watched as we talked about each player and then handed out awards. The HC was still on staff when this happened and called out sick that day, it was a bad look for him. We did it for the kids that were seniors and we didn't think it would be that big of a deal but we underestimated it, it was a VERY big deal to nearly all of the kids. The purpose was to build up the kids and encourage them for the future which it did.

Where we are now the school/ad always asks for the names of the winners and gets the plaques/certificates done. I would send a list to the AD and cc principals to say here are our awards and what has been given to them in the past. Pass it along to them, then if anyone complains direct them to those people. Only so much you can do if you got chit canned.

My last year as a head coach, I resigned (my choice) right after the end of the season. I got everything around and did a banquet, but I inadvertently screwed a kid I really loved and still have a positive relationship with.
He was probably the best defensive linemen in our area that year and easily would have made the All-State team. I had given information to our AD and told him that the kid was good enough to make All-State and that he should make sure to have someone represent the kid at the region meeting.
The AD piled the information up on his desk and forgot about it. When the region and state teams came out, our principal called me and was pissed because the kid wasn't on the All-State team and one of his buddies at another school told him that all of the coaches at the meeting were saying how bad it was that we didn't have anyone there to nominate him.
The principal was rightfully pissed and I should have been there. I coached the season so even though I wasn't the head coach anymore and even though I had passed along the information, I should have been at that meeting and made sure the kid received the recognition and honors he deserves.
Being fired is probably a lot different, but I really wish I could go back and wrap up that situation and season differently than I did.
