I see this in the NFL often. A slot receiver or wing motions short to the QB then reverses and basically ends where he began.
Are they trying to determine coverage?
Can his motion change based on how the defense reacts?

Disco motion? Checking to see how teams adjust coverage wise to the formation you are giving them.
Are they playing man? Are they playing zone? Will they make any sort of check? The QB can go thru his reads quicker or audible to something else possibly.

This type of motion can:
Determine coverage Bring attention to a player (decoy) Help a WR's release Give player a running start to the play (Get from Point A to Point B Faster) Fake that a player is motioning all the way across the formation. Coverages might change based on strength...so may be an attempt to get the defense to jump the gun.

I think you see it even more with no huddle teams trying to do just that - set the defense or create a mismatch.
