I appreciate there is an equipment section but thought I would get more views here. My question is:
What is your rule of thumb when buying helmets for a high school program? We want to stock 120 helmets regularly and are wondering what percentages you keep in each size. Do you use the same ratio every year?

Idk about the percentages. But the vast majority of kids wear a large. A few more kids probably wear a medium than an extra large. I'd say at least half your helmets should be larges. Then maybe 25% M and XL if I had to make a guess at it.

I'll agree with this. We just collected equipment. As a program, we have 137 players 9-12. As the coach responsable for collecting helmets, I can tell you we passed out 6 XL's this year. There are about 20 players who bought their own helmets (a couple have big heads). What percentage of those are XL, I'm not sure, but it can't be that many. Even if we didn't have players buying their own, I assume 15 XL's would have been plenty for us as a program. |

My experience has been that whatever sizes you buy will be wrong and you'll be scrambling around trying to find something to fit.  (You can tell I love helmet check-out day)  |

I started keeping track a year or two ago of exactly what type of helmet each kid had and what size to help with ordering new ones each year. I also wanted to form my own data on concussions to steer my purchasing decisions. Here's my inventory, what we passed out, and then what was left over from this past season. Once I get my reconditioning report and see what I'm losing I"ll then look at this to determine what sizes I need to buy.

Get some clothing measuring tapes and measure all of your kids. Determine what percentages you need for every kid in the program and then purchase the extras according to those percentages.

Hi Coach, Thank you for all of the data you have collected. I have a couple of coaches doing our whole inventory this week and I will share our numbers. Typically we have our equipment managers count the sizes on the rack when all of our equipment is issued and then we go off of that. I also keep an inventory and track all our helmets. Just our numbers here at a small-medium sized school.
Small = 0%
Medium = 38%
Large = 55%
XL = 7% (have 5 total, hand out maybe 1-2 a year at most)
