It's not that hard to figure out. Here's where we stood last year:
85 Varsity and JV players $32,000 raised by the booster club $376 dollars per player
We used our funding for:
Gear - pads, helmets, jerseys, pants, etc Field Gear - Sleds, Bags, Balls Camp Scholarships Weight Room and Conditioning Equipment.
$6000 - is all the school provides to run varsity football.
This year we are trying to raise over $50K.

We only have six fundraisers:
Gold Cards ($18K) Lift-A-Thon ($5K) Letter Writing (($3k) Junior Football Camp ($2k) Program Ad Sales ($3k) Mechandise ($1K)
I wrote the thread because my impression is that we have a very poorly funded booster operation compared to the better programs in our area. I know there are a lot of programs that raise over $100K.
We'd like to do a Golf Tournament or Auction but we don't have enough parents involved. 8 people do 90% of the work.

How do you fund your program?
It takes over $16k- $20k a year just to keep an average size squad in decent gear. Does you school fund it? Ours doesn't! To suit our whole team it's just over $100K. We replace about 20% of our gear each year.
If we didn't have bigtime support from the boosters or we couldn't hardly field a team.

Ha! $5000 budget to cover all equipment. New uniforms every four years. No booster program.
I don't even know what I would do with $100,000

LOL, you don't need to spend that type of money on uni's- you can but you don't NEED to. We are getting new uni's and it'll run us about $200 per set- game pants and home/away jersey. Nothing fancy, non custom, quality uni's with other money spent on things to help you develop players. You can spend a ton on uni'sif you want but I think it's silly to do so unless you have more money then you know what to do with.

Gee-sh you brainiacs, full gear: helmet, shoulder pads, girdles, pads, game pants(home and away), game jerseys(home and away),, practice pants, practice jerseys, then throw in back pads, collars, qb vests, gear bags ...that's $750. We aren't talking $750 in cloth.

Who buys that stuff every year?
I came in with an $11,000 debt. The school board gave me $2000 to buy some essentials. But other than that.. we are barely getting buy.

We got 12 new shoulder pads and 12 helmets this year...to replace the 18 shoulder pads and 10 helmets that didnt make it past recon. That is the first new thing we have gotten in 6 years, other than the normal(read mandatory) helmet reconditioning. I would kill for the 32,000 the boosters raised for you much less add that to a 6000 budget from the school. Just realize coach you don't have it as bad as you think. Others are in much worse shape financially than you.

Not really complaining, and I understand this may seem like a lot to smaller programs. But it's not in our area. We have two neighboring schools, one public and one private, that I am certain raise 6 figures annually.
One of the schools raised over $60,000 just on their auction.
Yes, we are not hurting, but our weight room and facilities are nothing like theirs. I'm certain that there are dozens of coaches on this baord that have BC's that raise over $50K.

We are allowed one fundraiser a year. This year we made about $7,000 a year. I get another $7,000 a year from the school. I did a little bit of research this year, and I figured that for $55,000 I could buy everything that I wanted for our program(excluding routine replacements). The $55,000 included all new weight room, uniforms, a new lev sled, segment timer, new face masks, etc. We have about 120 kids out 9-12.

I am a mixture of jealous and pissed. Here is my situation
We are a new school. . . this is our third year overall--just got our staduim. The school (ASB) gets all gate money (this pays for officials and part of transportation for all sports
Our Boosters is General sports boosters---not football. They run our snack bar and get all profits. This is their main source of income, although they do sell "school spirit wear". Their "slogan" is "we support ALL sports".
As a three sport athlete in highschool, I am all for other sports. But I don't have to tell you guys the difference between a program with 140 athletes in it wearing $800 worth of equipment and another program with 45 kids who only need $80 worth of equipment.
We get nothing from the school (0)
Anything we want from boosters, we have to submit a "proposal" to ask for money. Being this was my first year I asked for less than I knew we needed/deserved. They gave me half of the original 6,000 I asked for totaling $3,000.
I know they made about 20k from our snack bar. They actually had enough money to put $7,000 in a CD AND give the Senior class $700----They are not supposed to do this.
We end up having to fundraise to meet general needs. They do not help out at all with fundraisers, so it is basically me (and a few assistants) doing everything! I have to sell apparel out of my classroom for crying out loud!
This was my first year as Varsity H.C. I should mention that the previous H.C. was fired two days before practice was set to begin, and as the J.V. coach, I took it. I endured all hell this year, only to be met with even more.
This set up was fine the first 2-3 years because everything was new. However, we are starting to see major needs.
If it doesn't change I will be done

I cannot believe the money that some of you guys are talking about! We sell gold cards, put on a summer camp, and take in concession money for the JV/Frosh games. We are a school of a little more than 1000.
Next year we will loose the concessions as an overall boosters organization is being created, which I am skeptical about: with the school providing football less than 1500, is this a way to replace the school's obligation?
I would love to hear about some of the fundraisers some of you guys are doing. Raising even 5 figures would blow my mind!

Oh, what I would do with $50K a year for my program. I have 75 players grade 9 - 12. Which are school sponsored and 60 in grades 7 - 8 which are school affiliated (nice way to say "If you want it we will give you a schedule and you pay ALL the bills). The boosters are "general sports" boosters who act as Robin Hood and take from the "rich" (football concessions) and give to the "poor" (everyone else)" I have to submit a "proposal" and if they deem it important then they "may" fund "part" of the request. The schools gives me $1000 (one thousand dollars) a year and buy new Uniforms every 5 years (not to exceed $10,000) I fundraise $10-12k a year to support the MS program and buy all other needed equipment. I wish I had to live on a shoe string budget like you do! ;D

Your telling me your not going to turn game pants into practice pants when you get new game pants.

chuff:
Fight that overall boosters. . . or get an agreed upon percentage. its nice that they do all the work, but they will likely treat all sports as "equal"--meaning they will give you the same $$ as a sport like Tennis
Believe me, that is what we have and I am fighting it big time
