Big game this week against crosstown/district rival. Down year on both sides. I am a big advocate of playing great defense and running the ball, and plan to do just that. However, it would obviously be very big for us if we were able to generate points on special teams, or off big gimmick plays.
So my question is, what are some things you guys have done in the past that was really cheap and gave you a huge play when both teams are not very good?

Halfback pass. BTW - Cheap and Easy was my nickname in college... badumpah Once called a HB throwback to my QB on our own 5yd line in the first half. The school record for longest pass is held by our TB and longest reception by our QB. Both teams were undefeated and ranked. By far my ballsiest and best call of my coaching career.

"Rambo" defense...go zero and blitz everyone.
Take your top 2 base plays and install a trick off of them.
If you have a reverse, fake reverse is an easy one after you've run it.
Offense - after the ready for play whistle, run one player on and run 2 off with the second lining up on the sideline. Make sure the one you've run on is inside the numbers.

Toss pass is easy to install and run. I think it works against better defense because they will swarm the ball. Check to make sure the team you are playing has dbs that play aggressive against the run. If they don’t get downhill and you have a kid that is going to just fling it then you could have an issue. Should still be good though.
Here’s another one I like if they don’t get great pressure with their defensive line:

Why practice something, that at this is doomed to fail. Practice your core. Just put it in different order. You are know for ground and pound? So come out and throw it the first 15 times. The plays you have installed. Or run a play out of your run game weak.

I think a cheap score alone is enough to run one but also the fact that it backs the other team off your base stuff if also an added bonus to running a trick play early. I have also been with teams where it if far more likely to connect on a toss sweep pass than it would be to complete enough of those first 15 throws and get a score.

Takes 3 minutes max out of your week

not a trick play but I have also been looking at cheap looks to steal yards, I have been working on this:
3x2 with H back to the trips, FAST MOTION to make 4x1, Sprintout Flood to the Trips. Q hits Fast out, deep out, or runs it.
the reasoning is very few teams I have a good quads check on hand and very few can quickly get to it off of their empty check.
I'd also have a cheap quick game to take advantage if they leave people uncovered on the 3x2 alignment.

Sometimes the stupid/novel stuff draws their concentration more than the crap they've practiced a million times.

Fake punt. We have one that goes waaay back...teams ran this before there were face masks.
We also have a SYGL play from u/c where the ball is snapped between the QB's legs direct to the FB. QB runs a sneak (BTW, tell him to protect the family jewels) and FB runs outside behind a Wing-Back. Everyone blocks the QB Wedge.

Impossible to advise you without knowing the details of what you have already. The best thing on offense would be something that fits into an existing series of yours and that you just haven't thought of. For us, it was guard around, which brought us touchdowns when the officials knew the rule correctly (i.e. that backwards handoffs are unrestricted). But we didn't treat it as a gimmick, no, it was a regular part of our series that we were perfectly willing the other team to know we had. It fit in easily with our series, looking in particular like our weak sweep, because it was very easy to execute from our unorthodox base formation. It was a regular enough part of our offense that we considered a fake guard around but never installed it.

Cheapest and easiest thing I've ever seen done was my first year in coaching.
The "Batan Death March."
Off the opening kickoff (must be returned to the far sideline and outside the hash, after the ball is spotted off the opening kickoff Offense will take the field jogging out to the ball in line like so (xxxxxxxxxx) they will meander at the line of scrimmage as if they are waiting for a call the 11th player (your fastest kid hangs back behind the wall of 10 like so, (xxxxxxxxxx) (x) 1st player in line snaps the ball defense is out flanked off to the races katie bar the door.
Our offensive staff did this in a playoff game vs the #1 team in the state went to the house lead 7-0. All down hill from there though! Took 4 minutes of practice time Monday, ran it 1 time each day after that to begin practice.

Also installed a KO package that had one player faking an onside kick before the kicker booted it. Faked it again and again and then called two onside kicks in a row. Recovered both of them. Easy install: faker and kicker approach the ball at the same time, one of 'em boots it. Had to train up a lefty to onside kick but that wasn't difficult.

I don't know why we haven't done it in several years... We've moved to the sky KO. Maybe that's why...

Time saver too: we didn't need a hands-team for the rest of the season.
