Im wondering how many coaches really explore all the possibilities when planning there offense. Basically how many coaches consider even the so called craziests thing when added plays and or formations. For example Im toying with a shotgun version of my Wishbone O, well more of a pistol look ala Nevada. Also maybe the 5-1 super unbalanced single wing look and even a shogun run and shoot type formation with the Qb and the Fb side by side. Now will all these formations work.. maybe not will the benefit outweigh the negatives.. at this point who knows but maybe just the act of tryng something crazy will give me that one idea that will determine my entire season ya know. But hey I could just be crazy. All you seasoned guys chime in on this.

It's called thinking outside the box and being creative. First thing I look for in my assistants. If I were talented enough to just line up in the I and run iso, power and toss, than I'd do it. I don't have that talent so I need to get creative.

Yeah this is a really good question. Obviously we can all come up with the most craziest BS in the world when we are in fron of out white boards. I always think no we can put this in...this is grab-butt. Where is the distinction between grab-butt and a good play.

coachac,
Just doing the normal can sometimes get you normal results. Never be afraid of creativity. Just because the neighboring school thinks you're crazy for trying something far from the norm, no one ever said he was correct in his judgement of you.
Remember, a coach by the name of Dutch Meyer back in 1934 let his team take the field against opponents in some very unusual formations at TCU. Those formations consisted of 4 and 5 receivers spread across the entire field. This was during a time when everyone ran the single wing and remained in a double TE look 90-95% of the time. People thought he had fallen of the wagon back then.
I wonder if Mack Brown at Texas would think the same thing now!!!!
