Hey guys for those of you who are coaching in areas where it gets cold sooner and you deal with snow and cold, what are your best practice ideas to manage the cold?
-some days we go inside if there is a gym available but there are days where that is not possible with Volleyball using both gyms -do you shorten practice on field and do more film or weight room work? -do you adjust the practice periods to put team periods earlier? -how do you keep everyone engaged when it is freezing out?

In my opinion, it really depends on your team. Are you 0-8, and its week 9?8-0?, 4-4 with something to play for still?
If its 0-8, most of the kids have probably checked out (in my experience), be in/out in 75 minutes, keeep them all moving and not just huddled up and cold. ` If its the other, and you're still working for something, then do what you need to get where you need to go, regardless of time. Maybe if it's a lot of snow, you can do some kind of crazy snow angel touchdown dance or something.

There are also issues now with COVID and going into a gym, weight room, film, etc.

Our practices generally get shorter later in the season when the weather worsens. That said, if there are really poor conditions outside our practices get MUCH shorter. Sometimes just 40 minutes long.
When kids are extremely cold and wet they aren't really learning or progressing. Usually there's more value in ending practice early and keeping them fresh.
Another thing we've done is Leadership lessons in a classroom. These have been really good for us. Coach Randy Jackson has some excellent resources for this.

We taper practices over the course of the season to begin with.
If it's just cold we tell the kids to suck it up, if it's cold and rainy we might go film, short practice, weight room.
Any snow we're getting in October/November probably isn't enough to deter practice/gameplay.

When we were foot to foot DTDW we just laid the wrestling mats down and went thud tempo in the gym. We also did some circuit stuff both offensively and defensively. We were helmets and shoulder pads and banging it around a little, just trying to be mindful of the space we had.

If it is snowing, we are normally pretty deep into the playoffs. So taking time off is not really an option. If you need to install do it on the board. Keep them moving, dress appropriately.

When there's just too much snow, we've used parking lots and sneakers to make sure we are sound in our assignments.

Yesterday- feels like 8 degrees with wind chill when practice started at 4:00, 4 degrees when we wrapped up at 5:15. 4:00- specials 4:10-team warm up 4:20- PAT- had issues in last game and O indy for everyone not on PAT 4:25- O indy continued- only coaching point is that everyone moves..max reps and limited breaks 4:30- inside/skelly on the line go as fast as possible rotate every 2 plays at as many postions as possible so no one stands for more than 2 plays (less than a minute) 4:40- O team- 33 man drill- with backs rotating on every rep vs every play..scouts rotate every other play 5:00- D indy- MOVE drills 5:10- skelly 2 O groups vs 1 D. and inside 5:20- D team- 2 offenses with rotation on every other play for the D subs and anyone that is not active gets sent with QB/WR coach and runs routes 5:30- go get warm
ice bags in between 2 layers of socks, gators, gloves, mufflers(pouches) or hoodies under pads and most importantly
COACHES ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SAY ANY FORM OF "IT'S COLD"- THEY SHOULD BE TOO BUSY COACHING TO NOTICE

So in Michigan it stays pretty pleasant until about now which is the beginning of the playoffs. It's especially problematic if we make a deeper run. We have taken our kids up the road to some of the indoor soccer domes we have nearby when we get deeper into the playoffs where snow is an issue. We are no strangers to needing to shovel the snow off of our turf, and have no problem doing it. If we're shoveling the turf we're probably on a good run.

I think you have to just carry on as normal. It needs to be pretty dam cold to not go out. We practiced in 4 degree wind chills last year.
Now snow removal can be an issue. Our maintenance staff is awesome in that department.
It absolutely shows up on gameday which team was inside all week vs outside.
