Curious to know how different staffs schedule their weekends to plan for each week's opponent.

I am curious about this also. We have a varsity staff of 5 (including myself). How do you delegate responsibilities? What are common responsibilities for game planning?

Friday nights, games usually conclude around 9:30 or 10:00....after a hard week of practice/work, after the game we're not breaking down film but trying to relieve the stress.
The game film is duplicated right after the game and left for the next day.
Saturday morning 8:00 - Defense meets to review film then watch film on the next opponent. We toss ideas around and come to a simple conclussion of what we will implement (if anything new). This may last from an 1.5 hrs - 2hrs. We will prepare a handout / review sheet for the players Monday morning. Both myself and the Dline coach take the film home and watch further - I grade every player (lasting from 3pm - 6pm Sunday).
8:00 Sunday - offense meets and grades out each player, then watches some film of the next opponent. Not a whole lot drastically changes in their game plan, but after grading it is a good 3 hours they are at the stadium.
Monday, we hit the ground running.

On saturday's we show up about 15 minutes before the kids do. We start to make another copy of the tape. Usually, by the time we get done watching the previous night film with the kids, we will have 2 copies done. Then after the kids leave, we stay and watch it as a staff. Each coach will look at their particular position, (DL coach watches OL, etc...). With copies being made while all this is happening, by the time we get done watching the film, we usually have enough copies (about 5) for all the coaches to watch it themselves and break it down.
The OL & RB coach usually breakdown a copy together. The QB, WR, & OC ususally breakdown a copy together. The DL, LB, DB coaches, and DC usually breakdown another copy together. The Special Teams coach breaks down a copy, and the HC will break down his own copy. This is done sometime between the satuday morning film session, and sunday night. The groups usually have a set time where they all watch it every week.
Sunday Night, at about 4 PM, all the coaches will meet at one of the coach's houses (rotates every week). All the coaches go over what they saw, and what they think we could do against the opponent. Then the OC & DC will agree/disagree with what the positional coaches want to do, and the HC has the FINAL say. Usually get a gameplan figured out by around 7 (which is when Sunday Night Football starts here). Then we order Pizza's or whatever, and watch the NFL game together.

I was just at the Nike COY clinic in Allentown Pa, and the head coach from Pottsville High School (who have done very well in the past few years) said they do not meet on the weekends as a team or staff. Each coach is responsible for certain areas and they get them done and present them on monday. He also said he does not believe in any football work during the summer (7 vs. 7, drills, etc) just his strength and conditioning are the only things they do. They must have 90% attendance or they must pass a pre-season conditioning test before the start of camp. So far, no one has passed the test. This is a way of weeding out the bad seeds. Very informative and different

We have 6 paid varsity coaches and two paid frosh coaches. We also have about 5 volunteer coaches. We play Friday nights; the frosh coaches go out and video opponents. We bring the team in on Saturday around 8 a.m. While the offensive staff takes the team through a workout, the defensive staff is breaking down tape (as many as we have). If we don't have to scout on Saturday afternoon, the defensive staff will start discussing what we want to do. Rarely do we stay beyond 11 a.m. We meet as an entire staff Monday nights. We meet together to discuss "team business" (personnel changes, weekly awards, etc). we then break into offensvie and defensive staffs and work on our respective game plans. Rarely does this go later than 9:30 or so.

We meet with our players at 8 on sat. morning and go over the film from the night before, while we are doing that we have a coach getting the next teams tapes. by about 930 we are done with our players. We then break down the next teams tape. One person calls out the info, we have one writer writing down formation, down and distance, play, and what part of the field the play was run on, left hash etc. We then have three coaches drawing up the plays as we go along, each coach takes every third play, this keeps the film moving. we do the same on D for blitzes etc. that way the play sheets are done for monday on sat. THe person calling out the info will also write down personel as the tape goes along. We have 6 coaches and it works out pretty well. most of the time we are done by 11 or 12 at the latest on sat. morning and we are done for the weekend. Also one thought we have always had with grading all the players each play, being a smaller school we dont exactly have a stockpile of talent. We are lucky to have 6-7 really good offensive lineman for example. so even if we know a certain kid is low when we grade them, we may not have any options to change them if we wanted to. we may not know the exact percentage a kid grades out but we have a pretty good idea if they played poorly and need to be replaced, we have found this saves alot of time and keeps coaches a little happier when they can go home a little earlier.
