Coaches,
Have you ever removed a captain from their duties but they remained on the team?
Interested to hear how you went about this, particularly anything you do proactively prior to getting into the heart of the season.

I did that once. They had gotten chemical violation during the season. It was pretty cut and dry.

Yes. A player skipped two practices to hang out with his new gf and lied to us about it. As such, he was suspended for a game and lost his captain status. But, that is something that is written into our rules; any player who violates team rules may have their captain status revoked.

Starting QB got an MIP and we suspended him a quarter and took his captain status for the year.

That way: 1. You are not "stuck" with removing one that turns "sour" (can be a real "morale breaker"); 2. Involves more players in leadership roles; 3. Gives more INCENTIVE for players to shoot for that honor. Etc.

We did game captains during the season and had players vote on captains at the end of the year to be recognized at the banquet with a plaque.

We use to vote and do all that for captains but now at a smaller school the leaders stick out pretty quick and really don't see a need for full time captains. Usually there are a few guys who are always in the game captain role but also allows us to throw a kid who had a great week or has been working hard a bone for a game. Lead the pregame lines, go out for coin toss, etc...

We removed one last year. We have a discipline "points" system, hardly ever have to use it but if you accumulate 5 points it's a one game suspension. He did and lost captain status, the other captains were on board with it and everyone was tired of his antics. He actually turned the corner shortly after and finished the season well so it worked out OK.

Here is what I'd ask: What would you do to the player for the infraction if he wasn't a captain?

A team in our league removed some captains for violating s team rule a few years ago. No suspension that I'm aware of, just took away their captain status.
The kids quit the team, and sued the coach for bullying and for harming their chances of getting a college scholarship for football. It didn't end up going anywhere legally but it made the dude's life miserable for about a year.

In our state, that mip, if not self reported, would have caused the athlete the season. If self reported then they can't play till legal matter settled.

We removed captain status from a player after he was verbally negative with our team trainer. I pulled him aside, discussed how that won't be tolerated, especially from a captain. We gave him a chance to earn it back. He did and was great the rest of the year.
