My state just pushed football to Spring, so I’m wondering what other states who have done the same are hearing about the details for the Spring season: start/end dates, # of games, playoff format, etc. This question may be directed at a topic that is too fresh to know much about but I thought I’d throw it out there.

Minnesota is March 15-May 15. I think we’ll have 6 games but I haven’t heard about playoffs yet.

My state is planning on having a truncated fall season (for now), but the question for the states that are moving football to the spring is, after you get done, are they then expecting you to play again in the fall of 2021? That's not much of an off-season and a lot of football games crammed into a 9 or 10 month window.

Oregon:
Winter season goes from 1/11 to 3/6 (postseason), with practices starting 12/28. Still no word on what happens to fall moved to spring sports if they can't practice by 12/28.
"Season 3" (fall moved to spring sports) starts practice 2/22. All sports other than football start on 3/8. Football starts on 3/16. Postseason in winter sports could mess up practices for "Season 3" sports for us. One week postseason (basically bowl games) 5/3 to 5/8.
Spring sports start practice 4/19 and start play 5/3.
Football went from 9 games + playoff to 7 games + bowl. Teams not in a bowl can still practice that week and play another game if they wish. They also waived rules on off-season coaching, so we can do workouts or conditioning whenever the district allows us.

Michigan pushed back into spring as well. We got the announcement Friday while we were out on the field. Such a bummer. Honestly, if we play in March-May like they're talking about I'll be shocked.
On the bright side, how awesome will it be to get to do ball basically from Late Feb - November assuming next Fall season is back to normal?

Maryland will have 3 8 week seasons with no state playoffs. Winter goes first starting February 1, Fall mid March, Spring Mid April. Basically every sport will play half of their normal games. Each sport will have a 3 week pre-season (no scrimmages) then football will play 5 games. Better than nothing but no playoffs sucks!

One idea I’ve heard that I think might work would be a 6-7 game season with playoffs (unclear on the format) in the Spring, then football wouldn’t start again until school starts (end of August/beginning of September here) with another 6-7 game season and playoffs. That would hopefully give kids (and coaches) time to refresh, while also rebalancing the rest of the sports through the school year.

As much as I love HS football, aside from the problems with weather, Spring Break, turnaround to 2021 season -
I just don't see how we can play it effectively next spring without harming both winter and spring sports (which already lost one full season).

California, as of now, plans on allowing football practices to resume in mid December with the season running from January through March. They will have a second sports season (March-May) which will consist of the traditional winter and spring sports. So sports like basketball and baseball will be running side by side.

In NC we moved the season to Feb. As well as changing the start dates for every other sport. First practice is Feb 8, first game is Feb 26. 7 games and playoffs. Though we havent been given any details about playoffs yet. I do agree its a quick turnaround from one season to the next. I think the month of May or June basically needs to be a dead period. You have eliminated the need for spring practice.

Came to post that as well. Talk about burn out from everyone.... I also don’t get how all of a sudden jamming tons of games into a short period of time is good for anyone? Hasn’t the make the game safer movement been trending in the opposite direction. I won’t even get started on how miserable the weather could be for us if we play in spring.... PA is still moving forward with fall season for now but several leagues and school districts have already shut down fall sports. Big state association meeting on Friday for an announcement. We may have the weakest state association in terms of decision making/actual power. It’s been mind numbing to watch how inept everyone has been so far.

I think part of your observation here is that people don't really understand the structure of membership organizations such as State athletic associations, the NCAA etc. May I ask what decisions you would like to see be made, or what power wielded?

Around here most clubs playing rugby have a fall and spring schedule, but their practice schedule is lighter than that of interscholastic football.

Our season will be March 15-May 15. Spring sports will end on July 15, so we probably wouldn’t do much of anything until the season starts on the middle of August. They’ll get three months off and the spring football season will be shorter, so I don’t see people getting burnt out. It might be different in other states based off their schedules though.

In PA we are still waiting on a decision about the season. It’s been pushed back two weeks but that’s it. State association has been dragging their feet waiting for the governor to act. Then governor casually drops no sports till Jan 1. But that was only a strong recommendation and not a mandate. So now the association is still deciding what to but saying well we really only control post season stuff so it could be up to each local school district. To further complicate things the state is broken into 12 districts of the state association which have lots of freedom of how they do things. So everyone is just pointing fingers and trying to avoid making a decision at all. Very frustrating and shows how crappy our state system is.
