Our staff was talking about the extension of the team box to allow for social distancing. Someone asked the question "why didn't the box extend farther toward the end zone anyway?" Does anyone know why the team box went from the 25 to the 25? Why didn't it go from the 10 or 5 hard line?

I think it was to give more room for officials. It use to be shorter.

I think it was to give more room for officials. It use to be shorter. It was implemented to keep coaches from running the length of the sideline to harass officials. Used to be shorter because squads and players were both smaller (NFL teams had 33-man rosters until mid-'60s for example) and BITD players actually used to sit on the benches. |

While this does make sense, Ending the box at the 25 makes it difficult to communicate with officials in critical situations. I look forward to being able to call for a time out once, instead of yelling 10 times and having to sprint 15 yards. |

Not to make this all about officiating, but just maintain communication with your wing official. 99% of officials are going to be aware of time remaining, the game situation, etc...and will get your timeout called promptly.
In reference to the team box.... As a wing official, you notice that the closer the ball gets to the end zone and the pylon, the less space you have to work on the boundary. This is true even as far as the 15-20 yard line. Photographers, cheerleaders, whoever, all tend to move closer and closer to the field as the ball moves closer to the goal line.
Plays at the pylon can be brutal if the wing official can't move back of the sideline. Imagine having an entire coaching staff, chain crew and group of players breathing down your neck. Someone would get hurt if the team box wasn't way back at the 25.
