Fall sports were originally scheduled to begin Aug 21 with first games the week of Labor Day.
New start date recommended by state athletic COVID task force and unanimously approved yesterday- Sep 14, presumably first contest date would be Fri Oct 2.
Gives everyone more time to make decision. Big part of decision was they did not want any cases through athletics before school begins. Doesn’t guarantee anything but encouraging that they’re not cancelling yet. Governor has brought in people from multiple sports and education departments to ultimately help him make the final decision whenever it is. Transportation guidelines are set to be released in a couple of weeks, so that’s gonna play a part in future plans. All districts have been asked to make plans based on the three models of possible school - normal, online, hybrid. Athletic covid task force I believe has similar plans in the works based on those models. In a few weeks I think the final recommendation from state will be made on how school will proceed so everyone can implement their plans.

Should add - at the moment we are limited to small group/individual workouts as a “high risk” sport

Postponing worries me, I feel it's one step closer to cancelling.

GA. Zero chance we will get a full season as things currently stand. We will practice, maybe even get a game or two. One team with an outbreak will cancel season state wide.

My district voted on a 5 phase hybrid model to start the year. The problem I see is that the reason for pushing back to 9/14 was to avoid any cases popping up from athletics before school started. Now though, with the 10 COVID PD days to start the year we don’t have classes until 9/17, so now you’d theoretically have athletics starting before kids are in the building, which would seem to go against their original argument. Just seems like they’re painting themselves into a corner. I can’t say I’m optimistic at this point, especially when so many teachers unions are arguing to go back full remote.

I am in a small rural district in Southeast Georgia. I am not sure what will happen. I doubt we will play, but my understanding is that there are many authorities, including the governor who want football to continue. I have clue is we will play any or all of the season, but I have not heard anything that would indicate a zero percent chance.

Atlanta schools are virtual so they will opt out.

I also understand there are schools that are opting out or wholly quarantining. However, neither of those indicate that there is a Zero percent chance to play a football season. Unlikely, probably, but zero chance is not fully accurate at this point.

Have any other GA counties said they are doing this? I mean if they move to the spring then who do they play? Would the GHSA allow that?

I just think spring will be a huge headache.

Just approved, season will go from Feb 22 - Apr 25. Rule 40 that limits out of season coaching has been lifted for the season so out of season coaching will be allowed as approved by each school’s principal.
