So we have kids running and lifting weights, all while maintaining prescribed social distance, but are not cleared to begin any actual football specific activities (blocking, catching, lining up in formation, etc).
So far as I know nobody in my area has opened up summer football practices yet, although an old colleague of mine starts tomorrow. Am wondering if anyone has started actual football practices anywhere? Or if you know of anyone in your area that has?
If so, how is it being received?

Yep, in Alabama we're 4 weeks in. Tons of precautions, taking temperatures, wearing masks, no communal water, disinfecting everything, etc. A little weird but it's going well.

We do indo stuff. Never really thought of how many drills you can do without touching things.

I saw a video clip from Hoover’s workouts last week. Everything looked the same except the kids wore a pull up face covering over this face. That’s gotta he tough in that Alabama heat!

We're still under NFHS phase 1 guidelines, but we've got 7 on 7's scheduled next week. Not sure how that's been reconciled.

I don't know when Hoover is practicing, but we're going at 7:30 in the morning to help with that. And honestly, today was the first hot morning we've had. It's been unseasonably cool in Alabama so far this summer.

It looked sunny in the video I saw. But it has been cooler than normal in NC too. We are able to condition only in limited numbers. I’ve got a group at 8 and a group at 10 every day. And there has only been 1 day I thought was hot. Now we are dead this week for July 4 holiday. And it’s been well into the 90s.

We had a ball in KY yesterday
Of course having to sanitize and all that in between made it not worth it honestly.

For those of you who have started, are you having players get face to face in various drills, ie teaching players proper blocking technique? How is this being received?

Just having to make sure they have their masks on. The kids aren't concerned at all, pretty much what you'd expect from high school kids. Sometimes the they will grumble about having to wear the mask, and we just have to remind them that if they want to have a football season they'd better learn to deal with it.

We start next week getting to do football stuff. There are certain rules that do not make sense as far as preventing transmition (like they are too loose).
But we are going to follow those rules to a T and hopefully play football this fall.
Face masks are encouraged and not required, no communal water, groups no larger than 15, screening questions and temp before practice, that type of stuff.

Over half of MO has been in shells or full pads already. That’s severely low balling numbers.
State issued unlimited practices this summer due to covid back in May.
The southern half and northern parts have been the Wild West. Full go since as far back as May 29. Unless you’re along interstate 70 it’s been balls to the wall unlike any time before.

You guys get full shells this early in July? Doggone, never seen that before. MO normally gets 20 days of football activities in the summer. 2 days just helmets. 3 days just shells. 15 days full gear live. Unlimited lifting time. No spring football. State this year said do as many days as you need to due to covid. So many have been going M-F doing 2 a days for the last 6 weeks (since memorial weekend). Everything has been left up to the school districts. Some schools haven’t passed out helmets. Others are 15 days deep in full gear practices.

Must be nice to coach in a state that gives you enough time to properly prepare 😂

You guys get full shells this early in July? Doggone, never seen that before. PA use to let us wear shells for non-contact summer workouts. Now it's just helmets. We started summer workouts Monday. Whole team was there. Followed the guidelines we were given. Got a good workout in given the circumstances.

We get helmets starting in camp, which normally falls somewhere around the end of july / beginning of august. Given how dumb our state association has proven to be, I'm just thankful they haven't made us wait until the week of our first game.

You guys get full shells this early in July? Doggone, never seen that before. We get 5 days to run a "camp" where you can either take your team to a college paid camp or put one on yourself. You can use pads for those as long as you follow heat acclimation rules. Our first game is on August 14th... our first "official" day is July 27th. But we need to start over with heat acclimation. Heat acclimation rules mean: July 27 - Helmets only July 28 - Helmets only July 29 - Helmets only July 30 - Shells only July 31 - Shells only Aug 3 - First day of full pads allowed Aug 4 - Aug 5 - Aug 6 - Aug 7 - August 10-14 = Game Week It comes fast

I can't imagine doing that with our 22 player roster. Even worse, what if you went 0-3 out the gate? Talk about a moral killer

I'll admit I've been a supporter of opening things up as soon as possible under this pandemic. However, I'm a bit shocked that Missouri's response to the pandemic was essentially do more or do what you want in regards to summer football. I have seen some conferences (the one Hannibal is in for example) have slowed things down a bit.

I've been helping a buddy out with private training (he played safety in college, wants to learn more about OL/DL). He and I wear masks, use sanitizer, and limit groups to 6 or fewer kids with no contact. We ask the kids to wear masks, but we had to stop requiring it because parents got all Alex Jones on us.
I hate to say it, but this feels like about the limit of what we can safely do. We're in a hotspot county, and even this feels like pushing it.
Then, of course, I learned that one of the high schools in town held a youth camp with more than 100 kids. No masks, no sanitizer, no distancing. I really don't know what it's going to take to get people to take this seriously; here in Iowa, literally the first person to die was a legendary HS coach who was very well known in the community.
I guess people are gonna do what they want and damn the consequences or who gets hurt.
