I saw an air raid guy on Twitter today saying they were going to take a knee on first down their first play this season. He is really trying to get a national movement going with this, and he has like 4000 followers. I really wanted to ask why, as in what will it do to further anything but I didn't want to get roasted by the internet.
My problem is I loathe symbolism and all of the #_____strong, and lights on the field for our seniors who don't get to play and so on. I believe it to be adults doing something to make adults feel good. So my question is, the Saturday morning after this happens will anything have changed? Does this guy want to do this so everyone will know that his program cares? I kind of feel this is akin to the pink out thing (symbolism, not issue). I am not against this or being a hater by any means, I just really don't believe stuff like this does anything.
Please keep this civil guys, I think we all want the same thing, at least I hope we do. I just struggle with people doing something to be doing something.

What is the knee for?
And, I'm going to wager that whoever, whatever it's for probably doesn't care.

This is the first I'm hearing of this. What's the symbolism supposed to be for? Infectious diseases? Police brutality? Enforced shutdowns? Politics? Or just general frustration about the world?
If the audience knows they're going to take a knee, doesn't it lose its surprise value, and hence whatever shock it might've conveyed?

It’s not meant to shock. I believe it is to symbolize both police brutality and against racism.

Assuming there is no delay in College Football. I think it would gain national momentum if one, or a couple power 5 did it.
And while I am fine with some symbolism things. I whole heatedly agree on actually doing something for a cause. It is the plauge of "slack-tavisim". I posted something on Social media or changed my profile picture to #____strong and I feel like I changed something in the world.
I hate what October has turned into. An excuse for kids to buy pink gloves and towels. For our kids to wear pink they will actually have to donate to a breast cancer charity.

I'm the parent of a senior.
I am fvcking EXHAUSTED by fellow senior parents who will just not let this year go. I'm sick and tired of hearing about how these kids got "screwed". There has been so much nonsense the last few weeks...it's just ridiculous.
Let. It. Go. A year from now, NO ONE will care who got to give speeches at graduation or who the prom king and queen are.

It’s not meant to shock. I believe it is to symbolize both police brutality and against racism. But if everyone knows it's going to happen, doesn't it lose its communicative value? Wouldn't it make more sense if it were done by surprise, and then there'd be a buzz around the field as people asked, "What was that about?" while the few who were in the know and keeping the secret until then explained it to them? Otherwise it's like the national anthem. Playing it is so routine, nobody thinks about it. But when people started kneeling for it, that created a buzz for a while. Then once everybody knew about it, it became just as routine and meaningless as the music itself.

The NBA teams taking a 24 sec violation to remember Kobe wasn’t for shock and held communicative value. I get what you’re saying but I don’t think things have to be done for shock value to convey a message.

I'm all for a team doing this if they want to. What concerns me is if a coach catches backlash for not doing this. Remember, we are now in a society where silence=violence; ie if you don't actively support a cause you are inherently against it.
This isnt me making stuff up or trying to inflame the issue with false rhetoric, this is what is being espoused at the rallies. A very famous football player was taken to the woodshed for stating he was 'for the end of racial inequality, but against kneeling.' In other words you need to both support the cause, and the methods.
I am concerned that this may be pushed upon some, more likely in some places than others though.

In some places, it will be just the opposite. Where I am at, racial tensions were already sky high, now they are a boiling inferno.

I just hate the idea that we have to participate in some arbitrary form of protest to prove we support a cause or feel a certain way. It was the same with Pink Outs a decade ago, I know a guy who caught a lot of flak for not letting his players wear pink (as if that somehow means he wants people to get cancer). Its like the episode of Seinfeld wear Kramer won't wear the ribbon during the AIDS walk.

Where are those who scream diversity and tolerance? And I am intolerant of what happened on both sides, The cop and the rioters.

I understand what you are saying, but I believe I am writing about something else. I am not talking about what someone may or may not believe. I am talking about the necessity to display your beliefs in specific ways. I can support equal rights for all races without having to take a knee.

Sounds like a coach that wants to make himself feel good (hey look at what I did). Everything I do/call at practice or in a game is solely in the best interest of the TEAM (Black/White/Brown/Purple doesn’t matter) with no other agendas. Our kids work too hard to do anything that isn’t in their best interest in trying to win. There are other individual ways to show support if that is what you want to do.

All of this social warrior stuff, community service and Twitter posting, etc... Coaches have brought this upon themselves. What happened to just being a football coach?

What if your team unanimously approached you and said they wanted to do this? What if you played a power that week? What would you tell your team? Just curious.

If that is the focus when prepping to play a power, get ready to get your ass whipped. My boss is African American and it would not go well.

So you would tell your team no? I am not saying either way is right or wrong, I am just asking. Teams have knelt during the anthem in our area so it isn't a world away, at least from us.

I don’t think I could say no and stay employed or alive. Seriously. I am white in a school district where I am in the super minority. My boss/hc is African American, and I don’t think he wouldn’t say no, mostly because he couldn’t. But such a request will drive him nuts and or out of this job. And he is already pissed. I know cheerleaders did the kneeling and my hc put an end to that two yrs ago

I would seriously question my own ability if the kids think I am with such a request. My message is flawed, not getting through. I am all for making a stand, but in right time and place.

What if your team unanimously approached you and said they wanted to do this? What if you played a power that week? What would you tell your team? Just curious. I would come up with other suggestions for them that would be far more beneficial. Maybe they can raise funds for BLM or write letters to policymakers or invite African American speakers to give a talk. I would ask the kids, "What do you hope to accomplish by simply taking a knee? How do you think this will help the cause?" My guess is that the kids will have a hard time answering that question with anythng more concrete than, "well, it's cool and other schools are doing it." I mean...let's face it. It really is a lazy form of protest. It doesn't really require anyone to do anything hard and, most importantly, it would be "safe" to do right now given the culture shift we have seen the last couple weeks. When Kaepernik did it, whether you agree or disagree with what he did, you have to credit his courage for putting himself out there and doing something that he had to know was going to create a ton of backlash. Similarly to Muhammad Ali. Taking a knee now? Meh. It's safe. Yeah...some people won't like it but, for the most part, there isn't going to be a whole lot of controversy. It's been done.

Reminds me of the story of running lights in the 1950s. Might've been Paul Harvey or some other radio commenter who got people to turn their headlights on while driving in daylight to indicate support for...whatever. After a while running with lights on came to mean any of a variety of things, many probably contradicting each other; maybe they alternated days? This led to a lot of dead car batteries, so people started installing a small running light.
See also Thurber's Fable for Our Times, "The Very Proper Gander". Or the bit in The President's Analyst about the people next door, "Real right wingers -- flying the flag every day!" Remember Dicks Out for Harambe?
Reminds me also of the stickers at polling places, "I Voted". Whoopee. Somebody else voted too, for the other guy, so your votes canceled each other'a. Why should I care about the fact that people voted, if I don't know who or what they voted for or against? If you're for a cause that everybody's for, why are any of you advertising it? Tell me why you disagree with most, that's more interesting. If you're for something that everybody's for, the only thing to brag about is helping to accomplish it, like if you want to cure cancer, tell me about your research that might lead to a cure or at least better understanding.
