I've seen the discussion before (I think) but couldn't find it. What do you guys do with kids failing in the off season? Right now I am sending them to study hall. We are considering "cutting some of these players from the team until they can reestablish their grades and prove they can stay eligible. I know this seems drastic but we have been fighting this problem all year. Actually the last 2 years. Nothing we have tried so far has worked. It seems like these guys don't care at all and we are fed up spending our extra time on study halls when they don't help.
So please give me your wisdom, because mine doesn't seem to amount to a pile of crap on this matter.

we do a homework log. we have found that most acedemic problems stem from the kids not doing thier homework. so, they have a sheet of paper, and the kids have thier teacher initial that they wrote the assignment down correctly, then they have to show a coach that they have the completed assignment on the due date and the coach will initial his log sheet. at the end of the week, the player turns the log sheet in to the head coach. if he doesn't have it, or have it completed correctly, the player doesn't get to lift that day or that week(now he is hurting the team instead of just himself). The motivation starts to come from the other players, and not just the coaches all the time. it has worked for us.

Every player has to meet you half way on his grades if he's unwilling to do that you are wasting your time. We do not allow those with poor grades to participate in spring ball which obviously leaves them well behind others at their position. We do grade checks out of season every 3-4 weeks and check progress reports as well. In season they must be earning a C or better to play every week- there's no excuse to earn less then that in 99% of most high school classes.

We keep check on them about every three or four weeks during the off-season to keep them aware of the consequences they are facing. We punish them during Spring Football, which is seen as a fun time around our place (only nine practices then a game against your buddies). They run 1 "Bulldog Mile" for each D grade or N in conduct, and 2 for each F or U. A "Bulldog Mile" is our version of stadium steps. One lap and every step in the stands, both sides, is 1 bulldog mile. Say that they earn 6 "Bulldog Miles", they have to run them every day after Spring Practice. That means they would run 54 total.
It has worked well for us, last week we checked 1st semester grades and only about 1 out of every 4 guys had earned any at all. Down from about half when we first implemented this system three years ago.

Great ideas coaches! I really like the spring football exclusion & the bulldog mile. Although our stadium isn't that large I can think of a few things to add so it becomes more interesting for them. Thanks!

Coach, We use this form. I made it in word. The teachers fill it out every Friday during the offseason. With any bad remarks, we have "incentives" for them to behave (see the punishment thread from a while back). During our weights and conditioning class, we have study hall for 30 minutes on Tuesdays and Thursdays before we do speed and conditioning work. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays we're in the weightroom, so it works out perfectly. www.savefile.com/files/476063
