Since some of the talk has turned to off-season, track, etc. I though I would pose this question.
If you had to pick just one of these 2 attributes for your team, which would you rather have?
Speedy players (perhaps not as strong)
OR
Strong players (perhaps not as fast)

give me speed. 'cus, speed kills. think that if you can get 'em to the ball in a hurry you have a much better chance. sure, some may get run over, but speed will disrupt and allow you to swarm and "gang" tackle (as the old guys like to always scream)

speed
cant coach that as much
i can get them strong, i can even get them somewhat faster,
it is easier to make fast guys strong than it is to get strong slow guys fast
but going with just the premise of the post
speed all the way baby
if you cant touch them you cant apply the strength to them

I prefer speed myself, but the coach of the team that I play for regularly mentioned he wants a big, strong offense and a speedy gang-tackling defense. I play WR and SS, so never quite knew if I was best of both or neither!

I'll take SPEED everytime.
Speed kills. Strength is meaningless if you can't get a body to the point of attack.

Like the Montgomery Gentry Song says (sing it if you want): "...give me speeeeed....".
Speed thrills, speed kills and for all the reasons mentioned before I will take speed (with a little strength and size would be ideal)

I would choose speed also, for the same reasons as TOG. I can get them stronger in a little while to go with that speed.

If we are talking about as a whole, I would have to say speed. But by position and what I coach I would have to say strength. But this does get into a whole debate on what type of speed, track speed or athletic speed? I have seen too many players that have flat out speed but put a ball or stick in their hands and its like they are carrying a 50 lb medicine ball.

I too have seen the track speed guy who could not really use his speed to make plays. The need for speed also varries greatly from position to position on O and D. On the OL I will take quickness over speed, and will also want some size and strngth.

For me its easier to train them to be strong then it is to train them to be fast. Speed depends far more on natural ability than strength. I can take just about any 98 pound weakling and make him stronger.

We had a team of tracksters for receivers this year , which is great to have, but it does lull the team into a sense that they can throw the long ball (exclusively) due to the speed and they can outrun everyone. The problem we had was with the physical teams (ie big strong and fast) is where we had problems. SO, if the option was there i would have picked speed and strong.

I used to think speed until 92 when Miami and Alabama played in the Sugar Bowl and the speedy Miami team got smoked by the stronger Alabama team. As I see on shirts around here at ULM "Speed Kills but Strength punishes" so I gotta go with strength.

I'll take speed. Fast guys are usually pretty strong in terms of relative strength (strength-to-bodyweight ratio). That's what is important in sports.
Absolute strength (the guy who can squat or bench the most regardless of bodyweight) is a poor indicator of athletic performance. Give me a 165 pound guy who can run a 4.8 40 and bench press his bodyweight over some sloppy 300-pounder who can squat a dumptruck but can't walk and chew gum at the same time.

good to see you back on the board wildcat
good point about the fast guys, they are usually the guys that can pump out some weight if they spend some time in the weightroom

Football speed is very different than track speed.Jordan Shipley had good track speed around 10.8 100m but he is the fastest player on the field that I have ever seen.

Life is to short not to coach athletes.
Give me speed all day everyday and twice on Sunday.

not to be ....uh...Idontknowwhatthewordis.....BUT
Speed, Strength.....if I could have ONE thing in a football player, it would be TOUGHNESS. That is an attribute that I've found to be in short supply.
If I were a HC, Football season would last from August to January. After October the kids would no longer wear pads but they would wear singlets and headgear (wrestle)....

I also wish hockey were bigger, the ax and blades makes a man out of boy almost as quick as wrestling. Both sports in conjunction with football help crank up the toughness factor.

I agree with Ogie on the hockey issue. Hockey sure makes them get over the whole fear of hitting at full speed pretty quickly.

SPEED!!! And how far has Nebraska fallen?? I went to the University of New Hampshire today to see them whip U Maine 59-47(it wasn't that close). UNH is the #1 1-AA football team in the country. Maine traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska in Sept. and lost to Nebraska 25-7, it was 18-7 in the 4th quarter. There is no question in my mind the University of New Hampshire could beat Nebraska. That my friends, is sad....UNH is faster in every aspect of football than Nebraska. Speed kills and UNH has tons of it, Nebraska would win maybe 2 games in the PAC-10 or the SEC...

But we have kids who would rather sit on the bench and be a 3rd or 4th stringer on the basketball team rather than be a varsity wrestler. That's pretty sad. Wrestling takes a level of discipline and dedication that most high school kids simply don't have. Wrestling is, hands down, the toughest sport.

I would agree that wrestling helps football players more than any other sport. I can speak from personal experience in that wrestling improved my quickness and my mental attitude i.s mental toughness.
I encourage our players to take up wrestling even if they have never participated in the sport because of it's benefits to their football skills.
