Coaches
I am currently having the defensive staff watch 20-30 minutes of film from our previous year a week so I can get a different set of eyes on the product to see if there is something I may be missing. The staff is pretty young so I am trying to make it a little more meaningful and putting a purpose for each weeks film session whether it be personnel for the upcoming season (assuming we have it), responsibilities, or technique based questions. Has anyone done something like this and what have you required the coaches to do?

Has anyone done something like this and what have you required the coaches to do? at least twice a week. I get some hudl notification from a text saying this or that has been posted. And that is not a suggestion. And its a great way to find out who really wants to be in.

I will be checking that and I figure if I give them a purpose for watching and questions to answer we will get better as a staff. I dont think thats too much to ask and I have the blessing of the HFC so hes got my back as well.

We have for sure done this. I think it is ultimately helpful to go through the film together. Go play by play and let people talk about what they are seeing. Helps to reinforce ideas of how to scout and not just watching the game. (Something we should be doing more often with our kids to be honest).
It can also be good to go over different types of hudl reports and how to analyze different type of data.
Some people know hudl better than others, but it can also be good to assign specific tasks for your end of the year breakdown. John, focus on 3rd and long, Larry has the Passing game, etc.

I would spend a day or two on teaching them how to efficiently enter data on the opponent (unless you already have someone who does it). I have found the best way to do that is divide tasks, that way everyone goes in and puts in their specific columns first without watching the game and it gets done quickly. I would have them each breakdown one whole game on their own, then print up reports. Then have them each assigned 3-4 data columns, divide and conquer, followed by the reports. Show them how if they each do a chunk, and focus on getting the job done, it makes things so much easier. Or were you thinking more about how to watch film and grade out your own players?

All of this is good and we already do that during the year.....and we use the dreaded hudl assist. I'm more looking for them to watch and see where we can get better with personnel, tech, and alignment. They're good coaches, younger and less experienced so watching and learning the system and giving me some useful feedback I'm hoping will give us both something to take away. I like the you watch 3rd down, you watch pass stuff that will be included during the weeks. Thanks for that one.

We are not so much going back over last season--we've done a lot of that prior to the shutdown. Instead, we are getting ready for next season. Our offensive and defensive staffs have been meeting online for weeks making plans. Now that we've gotten far enough along that it looks like we won't get spring practice, we have shifted into preparing for an online spring practice.
We are putting together offensive and defensive installs and film cutups that we will use to hold online team, group and position meetings with our players beginning the first week of May (about the time spring practice would have started). We are going at 4 pm, the same time practices would have been held. I've told the coaches I would like for them to try to hold the meetings to about 30 minutes due to attention span. Coaches are practicing using google meetings (the only online video sessions approved by our district) and presentations. We are going through many of the same things as a staff that teachers have done in order to teach remotely.
It won't be any where near the equivalent of spring practice, but it will accomplish several things for us (we hope): it will give the players something football related to do, we hope that by getting them involved in the spring we can keep our numbers, we will get some teaching in that we would do in live meetings, it will let us engage with our players and will be a way to check up on them.
Our plan is offense on Mondays and Wednesdays, defense on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We have a number of players who play on both sides.

I wanted to start this earlier but at the time we thought we would be going back to normal spring sports. We are a small school so all coaches have a spring sport so I didnt want to get in the way of that. With all that whiped off the map we have started fall sports.
Alot of the install, cut ups, and dissections are on me. I want a new view of things since we are all in football now.
When we start collecting film from the new district we will begin hitting those films. We will also do a few films from last years opponents we will have this year but most of those have new HC lol.
I REALLY want to start defensive player meetings, thats the next step

Geez I wish! I’m lucky if I even see one of my assistants between December and May lol!
Can barely get them to watch film in-season. At a small private school in Louisiana and only have one faculty coach on defense. Nearly impossible to get real coaches. We get whatever help we can find.
Sucks when I got here 4 years ago my whole staff was faculty and pretty good. 1 retired, 1 moved to OL, 1 got a head coaching job. We have not even interviewed anyone close to the quality of the guys we lost. Enrollment has been dropping. Principal is not letting us hire faculty coaches anymore. Have to rely on non faculty coaches now.

I myself am not a teacher and do not work in the building. The HC and OL coach are the only two who work as teachers in the school. So basically what I am saying is, while having everyone in the building is ideal, it is not the end all be all. Also, coaches can be developed. I know I started real young and can think about a coach we have on staff that started very green, and can really communicate and understand football now.

As the previous poster said, sometime the best route is to find young guys who played for the program---even better if they played for you. If they're willing to work and learn, you can teach them the game. It's a lot easier to teach a guy how to coach that it is to teach him how to put forth effort.

We struggle getting kids to come back we’re a expensive college prep school most our kids leave and go to high end colleges and don’t come back or if they do come back home they are business owners, lawyers, doctors, or whatever. We’ve only had 1 guy come back and coach in the last 10 years. He graduated in 2014 and is now our WR coach. I think the biggest deal is when I was at big schools we were able to get more faculty coaches so we could take the 20-24 year old coaches and take the time to develop these guys in MS and Freshman ball. We’re having to use 19 year olds as varsity position coaches that are taking full time college loads and working part time jobs while also coaching football.
