I coach in upstate NY and we have just approved our JV teams to play, on either Saturday or Mondays, after the Varsity plays that week. In the past our JV team would play the opponent on Thursdays before Varsity played on Friday or Saturday. They made the change because we do have some teams in the league that have low numbers and now they will be able to have some JVs up for the varsity game if needed. My program has about 40 on JV and 40 on Varsity, so about 80 total. I would like to know how teams practice together. Any ideas or somethings that you do would be helpful. Is it worth practicing together? What are the pros and cons? How do you structure the practice? Any info would help.

Coach, We have always practiced together and have had numbers as low as 60 Soph to Sr and as high as 114 Soph to Sr. Our practice is structured like this. Stretch and Flex 10 Min. Special Teams 15 Min. then offense or defense goes first Indy 20, Group 20, Team 20. 5 min break. Then repeat the other side of the ball. 20 Indy, 20 Group, 20 Team. Thats a standard. There are times we will take time from one period to add to another depending on need. Now I will say we are lucky because I have a position Coach for all Positions. So when we are practicing Offense the LB Coach is helping the RB Coach,, and so on.

When you're doing your 20 mins of team I'm assuming that the varsity guys are taking all the reps right? Also does that mean that your varsity guys get fewer reps during the Indy periods since there are more bodies doing all of the drills?

We've always practiced grades 10-12 together. We divide them into blue shirts (varsity starters, back-ups, seniors) and white shirts (everybody else). When we go "offensive priority" the blue shirts go with the offensive coaches for indy, group, team, while the white shirts go with their defensive coaches. Then we flip to "defensive priority" and go through the same routine again.
Pros are every kid gets the same coaching in the same schemes and techniques, on both sides of the ball, and from the same coaches.
Any underclassman (grades 10 & 11) who doesn't play a lot in the varsity game Friday night or Saturday afternoon is eligible to play in the JV game on Monday. The exception is a kid who might be likely to play the next week because of injury or some other issue with a starter; we might keep him back on Monday to start prepping with the varsity guys.

Everybody engages with INDYS.
During "team" the JVs go with their coaches, Varsity with theirs. We have 12 coaches not including Frosh (who practice on an adjacent field). That may be a limiter for some, i.e. lack of coaches.
Full Team has the JV defense Vs. Varsity Offense...then switch. Here, we practice on a slight incline we have. JV align up-hill and play downward, Varsity runs the slight up-hill side.
In full pads it's a thud practice. Quick whistle. That includes ST. Here we sub often and get reps. We're super enthusiastic for ST.
If you don't have the coaches, you'll probably have to have separate practices if you want to do it like this.

Coach, When we go team, quite often the # 2 guys get about 25 % of the reps and they are mostly JV guys. Honestly they get their reps by playing Scout O and D

Our varsity & JV do indy together. We primarily use the JV as the look team Monday through Wednesday. On Wednesday after the varsity practice, the JV will have roughly 30 mins for their walkthrough. Since we, the varsity staff, coach them, there's no differences in offense or defense. Both the JV & varsity run the same schemes.
