We use Playmaker Pro, it's pretty good, but it needs to be upgraded. Its a good place to start though.

The best software is Microsoft Office. Use Excel, Word, and PowerPoint religiously as it does EVERYTHING I need a playbook to do.
But then again, I am the kind of guy that thinks the best tasting pizza/beer is the kind that is FREE!

We first started using Microsoft Visio many years back. Thought it would be the best for drawing. We've depended on it at work for drawing technical diagrams for many years. But after looking at all the Microsoft Office applications, they're using the exact same drawing tools. So we switched to Word, and now are moving to PowerPoint to add video clips and voice overs.
btw - anyone using microsoft apps, be sure to use the feature named 'Edit Points'. It allows extremly fine adjustment of lines. Just mouse over the line and right-click. Took me a couple of years before I found this feature.

I'm with brophy, free is the way to go. I've been using Word and while it can be a pain at times, once I got used to it, it really works pretty well.

I am a MS Visio guy. Can setup all your formations, routes, blocks as stencils and just drag and drop. Once saved they can be cut and pasted to Power Point, Word, PDF. Very Flexible!
