I may be the minority but this video pissed me off. However....14 years ago I was that guy.

I became a DC at 26 and couldn't believe what I would hear. It was easy to write bc now there is 21 years of being the guy on the sideline....

Left out "I didn't see it, Coach" I have to watch a ton of film because I don’t see all of the moving parts during the game. I don’t think most do. I worked with a guy that could pretty much see it all. I admired the hell out of that ability. I see more now, but when I was young I would have to tell whoever I was working for. Give me a certain position or a certain area to watch. Don’t ask me what the weak corner and the string safety both did. I have no damn clue. If you give me something specific, I will get the job done. I know the frustration is from when guys are given a specific key and they just follow the ball, but I have worked for guys who just asked random shitt from all over the field and expected you to know.

I got into it a little this year with a younger coach because I was in the box. It was the final drive of the game and we are up 5. It’s 4th and 2 with like 45 seconds left on the -40. We pressed our under neath coverage but played our safeties two high so we take away the quick stuff and get them off the field right there but are also protected against the deep ball. Their qb was a sophomore three games into his starting career and they had no legitimate over the top threat so I’m not at all worried about a bomb.
Our tight ends coach starts screaming at the corner on our sideline to get back and don’t give up a TD. Our corner bails and they throw a hitch for the first down. We stopped them on the next set of downs and our offense took a knee in the victory formation but I would have liked to jump off the press box and land on that TE coach.
We won, but dang if there’s nothing more infuriating than a coach who doesn’t work with a certain kid or group all week jumping in and messing stuff up.

That was me this year. Second time in my career I've been up there. First time as an OC calling plays so it was a bit different than what this video shows. Second time was this past season, and I was that guy in the video. As the O Line coach I started out on the field, but found myself relegated to the booth after the fourth game. After 45+ years coaching as a HC, OC, and DC at the HS and college levels I guess the HC thought I would be more valuable upstairs. Not sure if that was the real reason or not, but all I did up there was chart our drives, eat junk, and talk ball with the other assistant up there with me.

A few years ago we started 0-3 and I banished myself to the booth. I found I was being too negative. We won but I could hear all the chatter and guys coaching other positions as they saw fit. The guy signaling the Offense (Which I was calling) kept taking his headphones off to talk to others. we'd be late getting calls in. Finally I yelled "put your headset on and shut up!" My wife tells me late that I was in a completely enclosed room but I was so loud it was coming over the PA system and everyone could hear me. I took myself out of timeout the next week.

I quit wearing headsets after my first year as a HC. I wish I'd have never put another one on ever again.
My last year I got put in the booth. I hated that.

Ha, booth guys who keep giving play-call "advice" usually traces back to ambiguity on the HC. Tell the booth guy exactly what he is to be looking for, and what you do and don't want to hear from him.

My first experience in a press box was as a DC at the DII level. Not a pleasant experience whatsoever being upstairs and not able to meet with the D on the sideline. Second time was as an OC at a private high school and it was a wonderful experience, and a very successful couple of years. Third time was this past year, and you already know from my previous post what that was all about. As a former successful HC at the HS level for many years I would always meet with my staff prior to the start of the season and discuss duties and responsibilities for practices and games. This past year our HC had that same meeting and I was told as the O Line coach my game responsibility would be on the sideline coaching my guys up when the D was on the field. The week after game four the HC told me he wanted me up in the press box because he needed another set of eyes. I didn't argue, I asked him what else he wanted of me and he told me to chart drives. In games he would only ask me how many plays we ran after each drive. Never once asked me my thoughts on play selection so I took that to mean he wasn't interested. I could understand his thought process if I was a young pup, but as a veteran coach with 45+ years of experience it didn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Definitely related to this during my first few years coaching. I was at a small school and the only coach in the box. I was definitely overwhelmed trying to watch everything on all sides. I’m an OL guy and our head coach was too so he wanted me up there to help see stuff. Did it for three years and got a lot better after figuring out how to narrow things down a little bit. Also got my arse cussed out miscounting players, especially when the offense or defense would lolly gag off the field during punt situations.
I learned a ton, but definitely glad to be on the field now.

There are surely misses and it’s frustrating, especially when they are regular.
