I recently listened to a podcast about gifting.
2 of the thoughts from this were on the business end- New sponsors to our program and thanking the current sponsors
And I have gotten various items for the coaching staff but based on the podcast they weren't great gifts. What made a great gift was something that was useful in daily life that didn't necessarily have anything to do with the business
Knives was very high on the list. Part of that was so that anyone in the home that used that item would be reminded of the interaction with your company and start a conversation about it casually. I didn't think this applied to the your own staff as much as it did to business associates but the "expert" in the podcast said that it had the same effect.
My questions are: What would your reaction be to getting a knife set from your boss?
and
What gift that you have received have you enjoyed/used the most?

Virtually everything I gave my assistants was related to the program- clothes, gear, etc. I did feed them a couple of times a year at my house on my dime, but nothing outside that.
I wouldn't buy a relative I disliked knives.
Everything I've ever received as a gift was related to the team. I still wear a number of the hoodies I got now that I'm not involved anywhere. The other day I had on gear from 5 different schools at once.

It's always clothes. Hoodies, shirts, shorts, polos, etc.
Outside of that, it seems over to the top to me

Honestly, my answer to number 1 would be "WTF?" And, honestly, my answer to number 2 would be cash. My first year as a coach I was a volunteer, so getting actual money never occurred to me...until my HC gave me $700. I thought it was big money at the time, especially considering I didn't think I was getting anything. I may be different than most, but if my HC was to give me a gift, I would actually prefer it be something football and/or coaching related.

I will add that if the gift was to be not football/coaching related, I would still prefer simplicity like being treated to dinner or a gift card to a local restaurant.

I like when the HC gets us shoes. It saves me time from shopping and I always need a new pair of sneakers.

I'll make a stab here and say that what the OP is referring to wouldn't fall under the line of the polo you wear on game nights, or the t-shirt for practice. Think as a teacher, that box of paper clips that is in your desk drawer; you probably don't think "wow, my principal is great" every time you open that box even though it was placed in your teacher box at the beginning of the year. Since this is a business end concept, I guessing it is more along the line of the toaster I got from the bank for opening an account; every time I make my egg sandwich for breakfast I think about the bank.

You are correct.. I don't want the gift to be something that is required (polo shirt we wear on game day).
Something thoughtful...I was thinking a fan box from their favorite NFL or college team.

That's why cash wouldn't work. That's called bribery.

I've never been around a program that did this, but the concept is a good one. If you're thinking donors/sponsors, then you would have to have a relationship with each individual to know what that 'thing' is that you want to hit on. I.E. you have to know the itch in order to scratch it. However if you're aiming at your ACing staff, then I have heard of some 'quid pro quo' that programs have done. I.E. after a good year, the HC/bootster club/etc..... told each AC's wife to go down to the local appliance center and pick out a new washer and dryer or a new dish washer. Also another was the HC was told by a local car dealer to send his teacher wife down to work a summer job at the dealership; then after 2 weeks of work was told that she was going to be fired and that her severance pay was a brand new SUV. Those are obviously way beyond what you're talking about, but the gist is that if YOU the HC is wanting to gift your ACs something that is above and beyond the typical tshft/visor/etc..... then you probably need to enlist local businesses. Then based on what they can contribute, either in kind or in money, you can then decide on the unique gift that will mean a little more. If you're wanting to gift your sponsors/boosters, then I don't know of you need to have a special gift to repay a special gift. They are ones doing the social gifting; you need to find a way to say a special 'thank you'. Insider things like sideline passes, special setting/parking, etc..... is the way to go.

The best coaching related gift I ever received was from a parent. In 2012 when we went 9-0 a parent had photographed the scoreboard at the end of the game for all 9 games. They then took a 9 panel cabinet door, cut out the panels, painted it orange(our colors were navy and orange) and put all the pictures in it. They then had the kids autograph it. It was awesome. It hangs prominently in my man room in the basement.
Oddly though, I ended up "kicking" the kid off the team 2 years later when he was calling teammates losers and how much he hated me. I told him to not bother coming to our last 2 games.

A gallon of JB scotch was a nice present. When we go to clinics I try to make sure that the beverage of choice is in the cooler. 12 guys and 14 bottles...no beer on the trip.

Those are outstanding gifts...I don't think I have that kind of boosters but this would be amazing.
I have given boosters autographed footballs and helmets that I have acquired. Mostly our players but occasionally an NFL guy from their favorite team.

My HC knows I like to cook so a knife set wouldn't be too weird to me. I received a pocket/EDC knife once. That was one I used everyday until it broke.

I gotta second for the restaurant gift cards, that way coaches can take their wife out and the wife feels like she's also getting something from the program.
