Long story but we will be moving to an earlier release time for, probably, one year and then we will probably be moving back to about 4:00 release time. We currently get out at 2:55 but will now be getting out at 2:30.
We have a lot of lay coaches on staff because it is difficult to get coaches in the building at our school (long story, getting better, but not going to change over night).
This will be a major issue and we are going to have to get creative in how we handle it.
My original idea was to do some sort of Study Table or Character Development to give our lay coaches time to get to practice.
I would love to get some of your ideas and feedback on the Study Table/Character Development.
Thanks in advance!

Back when I coached in New York City before coming to Texas, we faced this same dilemma. Our kids were out at 3:00, but many of our coaches couldn't get to school until 4:30. We had study hall/character/weight room during that time. Every day we had study hall from 3:00 to 3:45. We had character from 3:45 until 4:00 on Mon and Weds. Then the guys went and got changed. We lifted from 3:45 until 4:30 on Tuesday and Thursday. We never had a grade issue, felt like we had kids making better choices, and were able to get our lifts in without shortening practice to do it.

Somethings we have done to help this problem is, try and have a set schedule. Monday has always been Gameplan, Film, and Weights and then go out if we need to. Tuesday film of opponent really for both our scout guys to get an idea and our starters to see what it looks like. Wednesday another lift and chalk some stuff up if we looked rusty at anything Tuesday, (one thing that has helped is having the kids draw up stuff, makes them study the gameplan and a great learning tool). Thursday is always study table and weekly awards. All of those can last up to an hour or can be as short as you would like.

Tape (if trainer available) 2. Injury Treatment 3. Chalk talk (&/or film work) 4. Walk thrus

Biggest issue is supervision of JV, which our principle is BIG on. Most of our JV coaches are lay coaches, and a few varsity. JV goes to either weight room or study hall each day at 2:45. Varsity goes to meetings and film or weights with the in the building coaches. We have our early people on the field around 3:45 or 4---depending on field availability (soccer used same practice field), and start actual practice about 15 minutes later. Kids get home at a decent hour. Our lay coaches can generally get to practice by that time. We start with indy periods usually, though, so we have plenty of coaches to take care of varsity and JV during Indy by having one group on Offense and one on defense and then switching.
