We have a Saturday game next season. Kickoff is 1PM (they don’t have lights) and the drive is roughly 2 1/2 hours. How would you set the day up?

Always like getting there 45 minutes before warm-ups, so ETA would be 11:45, and departure time would be 9:15. I would have the boys at the school around 8:15. Put everything on the bus, then eat a good pre-game meal with a mix of carbs and protein (pancakes, eggs, fruit). You could do this a little earlier if you wanted to schedule a midway stop to stretch the legs, but that's up to you.

The biggest thing we’ve tried to do on late kick off’s is making sure that they’re up early. So with a 2 1/2 hour bus ride I would try to ensure that no one sleeping on the bus so they’re all awake, ready to go.

I might look into stopping at a half-way point and doing a walk-through. It's good to get them up and moving around, refreshing their brains on assignments, and breaking up the trip. With that being said, I think we're 0-3 on that itinerary!

For long trips we always try to find somewhere about 30 minutes out to eat and then head to the stadium. A 1pm start like that we would try to have the team do yoga before we leave. We had a team who used to have 1pm start times. It is going to mess with internal clocks. Have to really pump the importance of being sharp. It's an advantage for the home team for sure. We managed to win the last with the above methods. Best of luck coach.

We'd leave early and stop to eat along the way depending on how far the trip was.

Advantage for sure, trying to minimize that and sell it as a special opportunity for our guys. i like the yoga idea, how long before the game?

No thanks, let them sleep as much as possible, show up around 8:30 eat something quickly after you load the bus, 30 minute stop to stretch the legs / do special teams check back on the bus go win the game.

Our trip wasn't as far maybe ~1.5 hours, but I think we did it at 8. Left at 9, stopped at 10, left stop by 11, arrive at opponents about 11:30am.

So with a 2 1/2 hour bus ride I would try to ensure that no one sleeping on the bus so they’re all awake, ready to go. We felt differently about it. We let them sleep. What else are they going to do? We woke them up about a half hour before we got there and they were fine.

We have a Saturday game next season. Kickoff is 1PM (they don’t have lights) and the drive is roughly 2 1/2 hours. How would you set the day up? Do you have a local Division 3 college that you could contact? They often have this type of trip. 1:00 kickoffs and they bus that morning. Budgets don’t allow them to stay overnight. Check and see what they do time wise and food wise.

When I coached D-III for longer trips we would eat breakfast around 8 am, pack and leave by 9, stop and eat lunch (sandwiches, chips, fruit provided by Food Service) at a rest area around 11, then go rest of way.
After game we either had pizzas delivered to the buses or ate at host school's cafeteria.
When I became HS HC again we had two long trips and did similar.

Whenever traveling, try to incorporate a walk through time in there as well as a "lunch" or something. Adding in more team means if something terrible happens (like bus breaking down) you leave yourself some leeway.
This year we traveled 5 hours only to have the bus break down in the parking lot. We lost about an hour worth of time but since we have an hour build in, we got there on time.

Coach, From experience. Let them eat on the bus (bagged lunch or whatever). We generally want to eat 3-4 hours before the game. That means eating at 9 or 10 for a 1 PM game. You probably want to leave about 10 minutes of extra time there (long trip, bathroom) before your normal pregame routine starts. All the pregame depends on your normal gameday.
The thing we learned the hard way is to have a plan to feed the kids after the game. The are leaving their homes around normal school time. You won't be back until around 6 Pm.
True story. We had a playoff game (neutral site 10 min drive for opponent, 3.5 hours for us) that we were winning. We had arranged with a local Pizza place to drop off pizza after the game in the locker room. Pizza place called at halftime to say, sorry no Pizza. In a place that is rural, there are not a lot of options that can handle a traveling party of 70 or 80 on no notice. Really had to scramble.
