Hey guys, this is my first time on this site. I heard about CoachHuey.com from a good friend. I am a first year head coach looking for resources to build a program from the ground up. I heard this is a great site to get resources and advice from good people. We are a spread time with an experienced QB with skills guys around him. We are also a 3-4 defense with a lot of hybrid safety/OLB type guys on the outside.
Any advice and/or suggestion to help improve a team that was once 0-63 is greatly appreciated.

I have heard this over and over again...Be yourself. Run what you believe in, and delegate what you hate.
I based our program off of Urban Meyers "The Plan" he used at Bowling Green. Have a plan for academics. Have a plan for the weight room Have a plan for meetings Have a plan for off-season Have a plan for your coaches- develop them as much as you develop players. Have a plan for parents- be as pro-active as possible

It's a logistics game
Keep the kids in town by having a good relationship with the youth programs and the middle schools. You should make weekly trips to youth football games and marking period visits to the middle schools
Fund raise like crazy. Make sure your field has adverts from local businesses and corporate sponsors.
Plan everything, practices, weight room, etc. at least 2 months in advance
Keep a calendar in your office and write everything down (in pencil)
Surround yourself with good people and let them know what the expectations are for their role on the coaching staff. Don't leave anything up for assumption.
Build good relationships with other sports coaches at the school because they can usually help you out getting players or supplies in general. They can be your best friends or worst enemies depending how you treat them

Where there is a will, there is a way!! Step #1 - Inventory your physical facilities and evaluate your athletes. Step #2 - Formulate your plan. Step #3 - Go to Work!

If he was a good friend, he would have told you about the site sooner! Just kidding...I am in the camp that says weightroom first. Then implementing accountability and consistency. I think you want to be able to challenge kids but also get them in a mindset that they want to show up everyday and be challenged. Good luck!
