Season ends First week of November. The H.C. resigns end of November and no one has organized the team since. As far as I can tell there haven't even been updates with-in the school on what/when to expect to return. Most teams in our area that do not go to the playoffs usually start weights, etc after Thanksgiving break.
My question is what would be an appropriate timeline upon returning from Winter break to get started (there will be another week of lag time for processing). Is it weights, meeting, etc day 1?

Coach Option1, 1. Meeting-detailing your expectations, requirements, and your overall vision of the program...in that meeting include your expectations for weight room attendance, schedule, required lifts etc... 2. Get after it!!!!

Thanks. I'm good on the order of operation and there are lots of good threads here on that. However, I'm wondering if there should be an "information" period that allows me time to get information out and for players to get affairs in order.

These are 14-15-16-17-18 year old fortnight addicts. School starts back up when? Monday? Have a meeting on wed/thurs - start weights Monday the 13th If A few days is what you meant by “information period”. Sure, it would probably make sense. If a few weeks? No

I agree with the above, have your meeting go over basic expectations and get rolling....
I would add in the initial be highly inclusive, try to draw as much interest as possible, and have incentive base off-season program vs. consequence based.
First job is to build the herd! Ultimately, you don't want to run off potential players in a first impression... Let them get to know you and you them.
Ideally, they leave your expectation meeting inspired excited about the new coach and starting to work for next season.

No This is more less what I was looking for, Thanks. Fortnight addicts yes, but there are other sports, jobs, family commitments. I didn't want to go in there too quick expecting kids to miss practice or have any other "obligation" as an excuse. I've already been told I will have to meet after school so I'm leaning on more experienced coaches on the forum to help get my ducks waddling.

Well, obviously having a meeting your first day in the building would have challenges. Do you know where to meet? Do you know your way around? Do you know how to even get the word out that there will be a meeting? I would reach out to the other coaches about a meeting and try to work with them so that multi-sport athletes can attend.

Thanks for clarification. The above timeline ideas are good outlines. It is always tougher than we envision it being. HOF coach that I know took over as HC at the school he was assisting it. Had the meeting with the team and outlined expectations. Had everybody all excited. First day he has weight room open. Program written out on the board. He has a grade book to use for attendance. Ready to roll. One kid shows up.... He has gone on to win over 200 games, state title, all the trimmings.

You have a few days now. How about starting a Social Media Blitz to draw attention and excitement. I would try and do something in the weight room this week coming back. How about a testing week Thursday and Friday.

Get word out in school Mon/Tues and have a meeting Wed/Thur to lay out expectations, plan or attack, rules, etc... Start everything full go the next Monday. Also, you may want to have a parent meeting sometime in the spring to as a new coach to let the parents know what your plan/expectations are too.
Kids want to have structure too, don't be afraid to come with expectations.

Start ASAP. Everyday they go home right after school makes it harder to build a habit of staying. Have your meeting to lay out expectations, then get them in the weight room. Meet with coaches before school. Lay out the expectations for them. It is your program so you will do things different than your predecessor. Good luck!

Get the name of every player in the program. First find out who is not in a winter sport and start with them. Personally ask all of them personally if they plan on playing next season. If yes, find out what other sports they are involved in. That will make it easier to keep track of you need to and when.

Helps you put names to faces quicker. Our school also does it with all incoming Freshmen. Helps a ton.

You don't need anymore lead time for getting started than you need leadtime for the meeting. Once you meet---start the offseason program the next day. They'll be excited from the meeting, translate that immediately into getting them into the offseason workouts.
