We are looking to add a code of conduct to our team rules…
Recently there was an issue with a baseball player on the JV team. He should be kicked off the team but it looks like he will only lose 1/3 of the season as pertaining to school conduct rules.
Everyone agrees that he should be kicked off the team for good; however the coach and AD have not ground to stand on.
My question is, do any of you have a code of conduct rule in your team rules that allows you to dismiss a player for discretions detrimental to the team? How do you word it?
Thanks
Hoption

Our school (Private Christian) has rules of conduct for all of the students that preclude the need for any additional team rules, other than practice attendence, etc. A coach can also "Bench" a player for a variety of reasons. If they don't handle it well - becoming a cancer, then the player in effect "takes himself off of the team".

from my "player contract":
• I pledge to observe all of the team and school rules. I understand “Do what is right, always!” and will apply it to my actions. • I understand that breaking rules means one or more of the following a) more conditioning b) possible game suspension c) possible expulsion from the program. I will accept the consequences of my actions. This is called being an adult. I will learn from my mistakes. • I pledge to represent my school with class. I will not bring embarrassment to myself or others. • I pledge to be a role model to the future players, and assist in establishing a great football tradition for the program. I have read these rules and agree to follow them during the season. I also understand the consequences for any of these violations could result in my dismissal.
My Superintendant thought that these ideas along with the rest were a great idea. Not so much by ALL of the parents( always a few haters) but it went well all in all.

We have a code of conduct, but a lot of it is dictated to us by our district. The problem is that situations are not always interpreted equally, so you have situations where a kid did something and got kicked off for good, and across town something similar results in a game suspension.

We use a contract and a point system
EVERY football player can remember 6 points.
In the case of our player contract if a players reaches 6 points, he is done for that season.
If a player reaches 3 points, he will serve a 1 game suspension
we have terminal policies that deal with drugs, alcohol, theft, etc. These earn 6 points right away - Kids have the right to appeal via due process
we have severe policies that deal with fights, disrespecting teachers, etc. These are between 3 and 5 points depending on the severity
and we have our regular policies that carry 1 to 2 points.
Our players also have an opportunity to have points taken away based on good behaviors and teacher recommendations.
I've used this for about 8 years. Kids stay in line and we've only lost 4 kids (drugs/alcohol).
We are explicit in our explanation of our rules and we regularly review them (you have to with teens). This system works and our kids sign a team contract promising to adhere to them.

Thanks Hoption I think its pretty important to spell that out in writing and at parent and player meetings and also thru player contracts. In my program manual i included a section on discipline, the philosophy I believe in and how I plan to hold the kids accountable. i use something called "bellies" as a form of discipline, i also plan to create a unity council made up of team captains and top team leaders. 1st offense- bellies (varying amount based on the issue)- loss of playing time 2nd offense- bellies doubled- game suspension 3rd offense- visit unity council to discuss actions detrimental to the team, present case for staying with the team, accept consequences for actions, bellies tripled- likely wont play for two games. 4th offense- see ya. *cancer spreads. cut it out or watch it grow. something like that. I also had player and parent contracts with my expectations layed out, also parents and players must sign the schools athletic handbook. I also made up a " code of ethics" which basically describes desired behaviors of the guys who wear our colors.
