First, do you grade them?
Next, If you do, how do you use the grades?
A. Do you post their grades? B. Use the grade for award stickers. C. Don't tell the kids their grades, use info only to correct mistakes?

yes
a. yes b. yes c. no, except this one time a mom came in and told us we had to not post grades because it was in the kid's ARD to not post grades, hc made me not post them to keep that crazy woman off his butt, the kid's ard also said he had the opportunity to retake a test until he passed, his mom wanted us to put a sign up in the locker room proclaiming him to be a superstar

how I grade
0-didn't know what to do 1-knew what to do, but didn't get it done 2-did job 3-extra effort
then extra notes for dominations, everything else using little codes, just use a legal pad and draw lines, looks like a total mess
when done, figure out the total number of plays, times it by 2, then figure out their percentage off of the total they had for all their plays
i suck at math and this is easy for me to do

we post grades on EVERYBODY.... here is a my defensive grading as an example putfile.com/pic.php?pic=11/31313073274.jpg&s=x11(formula driven in Excel - just track stats and it spits out the numbers) It's weird, but the kids REALLY get off on the grades. Monday before practice they huddle around the board like Pavolovian dogs waiting for them to be posted. It is there way of validation / marked improvement. The way we grade, they are irrefutable - you either followed your assignment or you didn't - it's cut and dry. Offense, they grade like effort / assignment / recognition....and it's just + or - on a given play.

WOW! that's about all I can say to that.
I can see it now, ok, Mr. Defensive End, you have to count to 20 before you rush the quarter back, he has extra time on his modifications.
SHEE-ASTA!

I image I would have every parent in world on me if I did that. I am not passing judgement, gosh knows I would love to do it sometimes, I was just curious.

I've never received 'reprisal' from parents - THIS one was the most negative/harsh I'd ever written (lot of blown assignments). Usually they just stress what they are doing right and they one thing they should focus on improving. What is written on the grading is usually what is said in practice, so it's not like they are hearing anything different.
We invite the parents to film sessions - if Johnny is screwing up, you'll see it on the film...
Win or Lose, the parents ALWAYS have the better way of doing it. There is a time and a place.

how I grade 0-didn't know what to do 1-knew what to do, but didn't get it done how do you know if they didn't know what to do / knew what to do? Meaning they faced a front you didn't practice against, or something? If so, how do they get penalized for that? Curious....

I expect them to know what to do against any front. How can I tell? I know the kids and have seen them practice a million reps. Also will just ask them in between series and they will 90% of the time admit when they screw up.

wow - that's pretty cool. I've been to our offensive film session meetings. I'm serious - swear to God... Coach: "Johnny, when you've got a linebacker blitzing, you have to protect the inside gap and engage him ....he's YOUR guy"Kid:"I DID block him!" Coach: No you didn't - look, there he is....and there he goes! He sacks the quarterback, does a dance, and takes the ball into the endzone.Kid:"I blocked my guy, though, coach. I know what I'm doing. My guy didn't sack the quarterback" Coach: What? Number #53....that's the guy, the linebacker....see him ...watch him creep up ....this is YOU.....you are standing here...and there HE goes...Kid: "No he didn't " Coach: Number 53 is the one dancing on your injured quarterback here...Kid: "That's not my guy....I blocked my guy" It's like fighting the Black Knight or something....

ha
my ol is "invincible" they can be dense like that too, and I have been in those conversations for sure
I just expect them to be able to do it on the run. They don't always get it done, but my expectation levels are high. Given the fact that I have dumbed it down to some really simple schemes up front to make it easy for them, they had better be able to do it or as unathletic as we are we won't have a chance to win. My job is to give them a chance to win. They are the ones that have to go out and win it.
Your arm's off
no it isn't
what are you going to do, bleed on me?

We just grade the entire "O" as a team. Already too much I,I,I & ME, ME, ME nowdays! We score, everybody gets a sticker, (even the subs) We give up a sack, we all lose one, We win and we're all happy, Lose and we all feel the chief's wrath next week!@#*#! I don't like to single anyone out for too much praise or abuse. Wait till their playing for money!

brophy, I just read your comments on your grade sheet, and I commend you. I think I could get by with that with our guys and their skin is as thin as tissue paper. it's all about how you support your players. you can ride the crap out of them, but if they know you're on their side, then they'll work to get better, but this is a topic for another thread. good luck finding w/ your search, btw.

i didn't see any problem with the words on there either just being blunt
as for "singling" people out, how else are they going to learn? just a tool to help teach them what they are doing right and wrong

I don't mean singling out for a butt chewing at practise( do that all the time) or in games (try to wait for player to come off the field, rather than scream his name out. His dad might come kick my !@#*), I'm just talking about individual grades in a team sport like football, makes me nervous! Maybe I'm just getting soft in my old age! You guys are teachers and used to grading and I'm not. In the words of 'ODDBALL' from kelly's hero's-"Take it easy big joe, some of these people have sensitive feelings"
