"Setting the Tone" by Frank Lenti, Mt. Carmel IL HS. Best I've ever seen - I use a lot of it myself!

Probably a lot of what you say will be based on how things have been before: *are you taking over a successful program having been handed the keys to a Rolls Royce? *are you taking over for a program that should've had success but hasn't? *are you taking over for a coach who the kids loved but couldn't win, mismanaged $$ etc.? *are you taking over for a guy who kids didn't respect and wouldn't play for? *are you a brand new guy from outside or are you getting upped?
All those things will contribute to what you say when they gather. When Lou Holtz took over after Gerry Faust he came in and a few guys were slouching, others had their feet up on the row in front of them, etc. He stood up and said, "Sit up, put your feet down. I'm Lou Holtz and I am the new football coach."

All sounds good. Be sure to be yourself or they will see through you. Basically tell them what "we" are giong to do and how "we" are going to achieve it. BTW triple....do you run the triple?

Congratulations on your new job! Best advice I can give you is to be yourself. Stick to your plan and understand that you can't typically fix a program like that overnight. Concentrate on the kids and what your goals for the year are. Make sure that you have S.M.A.R.T. goals S.pecific M.easurable A.ttainable R.ealistic T.imebound Then work your plan to achieve them. Make sure you communicate them to the kids, parents & administration. The more "buy in" you get from all involved the better off you will be down the road. Finally make sure that everyone involved understands how much you care about the kids and the total growth of the program and the kids that play in it. Once they know how much you care then they will care how much you know and will work to help you achieve the wins that you are looking for.
Good Luck!

Congrats on the hire! Came into a similar situation, down for years...not from community....very tough conference The firsts thing on my list was to get a verbal and signed" Commitment to Excellence". If they are not only committing to making this a better team/player but more importantly by this commitment it will make them a better person(which is our main goal), in the process we will kick the crap out of the other team and win games:).I will sign it as well as shake hands man to man. You gotta be accountable for who is in your program. Rules violations should be handle swiftly and fairly. GET RID OF ANYONE...ANYONE THAT CANT LIVE UP TO PROGRAM STANDARDS. If they want to be a part of the program they will do what they need to, to stay around. You cannot bend on this one! "The pretenders, the guys that arent here for the team, they always weed themselves out" Joe Gibbs
As the HC EVERYTHING falls on you!! Meet as many times as needed to make sure that everyone is on the same page.(Players,Staff,Admin,Teachers,Parents, Boosters.etc) 80% of is spent off the field.
Pick and choose your staff carefully!!!! Im all for giving someone a shot(I was that guy once)but you dont want an entire staff of guys that never coached before. They might have a good heart but there is no sub for experience. Most successfull teams have a staff that have been together for a while or have a ton of experience.(I have 5 former HC on staff)
Learn the other side of the ball ans Special Teams!!!
Have a plan of action for everything!!You have to believe in it..sell it to your staff...as a staff sell it to the players. You gotta have a game plan for any/everything.
Be yourself with the kids(they love that)if your going to be a jerk..be a jerk...if your soft spoken...be that but stay consistant.
Defend your program and those involved uncontiontionally. If they know you will go thru the fire ..they will do anything for you.
Show/Tell your players you love em..in other words you care about more than just X&0's. Its sounds funny but the kids light up when they hear those words and know that you mean it. Dont get me wrong it times will have to rip them a new one but all great leaders have the able to show compassion. Check out how some of Coach Lombardi's players spoke about him!
Figure out FAST who will support you from the Admin side!!!!!!!IF they dont support you at the very least keep them informed about the direction of the program.
Find a JV/Fresh HC that believes(and will foster) your believes. YOUR SUCCESS IN THE FUTURE DEPENDS ON THIS GROUP!!!
Network with as many other coaches as possible.
Be active in college recruiting. Join the State/Local Coaches Ass..find out about liability.
HAVE FUN!
