Ok guys, I'm an equipment manager at an SEC school and I work with the offensive coordinator. My game assignment is to set up the communications upstairs in the booth and during the game I stay up there on a headset to make sure everything is working right. Basically i sit there and drink diet cokes and listen to the banter back and forth. What would you guys do in my situation to pass the time for someone wanting to go into coaching? This year is my first year in the booth, the last two years I've been on the field. Looking forward to hearing your responses!

If it was me, I would take notes obviously, but not obnoxiously. Basic things like what you would write down when breaking down film (D/D, hash, call, result, etc.), protections used, footwork of X position, whatever. You can't lose with your eyes and ears open with your mouth closed.

why is the playcaller calling that play what is he (and the others) looking at to determine the play calls and the sequences they are calling the plays ... i.e. adjustments

Mouth in Park, mind in overdrive and soak in all you can. That is an incredible amount of football knowledge at your fingertips. I don't know what else you have access to, but I would try to get in on staff meetings and position meetings. Watch and listen in practice and learn how to be efficent in your drills and your work. I know film breakdown is where many young coaches really struggle early on. Without getting in the way, try and see how they breakdown film, what they look for, why they look for it and so on. Wow. . .just try to learn everything. . .lol!!

I would make sure you let them know what you think about each play call; show this SEC coaches how it is done.
Just kidding . . . sounds like a great learning oppurtunity.

I would chime in every once in a while with, "That play doesn't have a chance, or I bet Urban Meyer wouldn't run that play in that situation."

lucky you
do your best, BE QUIET (if they ask you, give your opinion------they'll never listen unless they initiate),
Oh, if the offense starts scoring 50 points a game, hang out with the OC as much as possible.....one day, you could end up like Mike Leach (followed Mumme everywhere, before landing his own gig)..................that is a LOL, but only slightly-------really, do it if the offense explodes (or the D locks down)
