Any of you guys know coaches that really just get off on the power trip of being a coach? The kind that just start yelling and screaming at the kids to get them to do stuff?
It's driving me crazy

There is one in our area that does it real bad...we were in a passing league tourney with them and one of their TE"s dropped the ball...he started screaming "what the **** do you think you are doing on my field, get the hell out of here you will never play tight end for me, stay on defense" Even I was embarassed. Felt bad for the kid! And the rest of his players. The sad thing is....he is a ta public school and has been league champs 15 out of 22 years at the school.

We have one in our school that coaches another sport but he thinks his is the most important.
We had a coach from a top 5 program in recruiting so we went down to one of the kids classrooms to get him so the coach could talk to him.
Knock on the door ask the teacher if we could speak to this student and he says "NO"
First time this a teacher has ever said NO.
They were not even taking a test or anything.
We were amazed, the college coach just laughed.

well out of trips....we generally don't run power...but I suppose bringing the H-back across and..... OH! OH! you're talking about egotisitical coaches........uh...um...NO....No...uh...none on THIS staff.... I think it comes with the territory - football is a prideful sport. One, where if you're not careful, you can pat yourself on the back taking credit for a lot of stuff you COULD take credit for, but SHOULDN'T. The "old school" method many times is played up with images of a 'dictatorship' and the Head Coach is supposed to be Mussolini or Patton. Which is the SOLE REASON those "Doug Neidermeyer-types" are drawn to coaching...an opportunity for absolute power. choose your staff wisely - who knows when to shut up? who knows when to just listen?

i worked for a guy who was like that.
once on the practice field, he starts yelling and cussing at a coach (in front of the kids mind you). the reason for this was about socks. all the assistants were give practice gear, just like everywhere, and the assist. was wearing the calf length socks pushed down. well the hc starts going nuts and asks him "are you the hc of this team?" the assist say "no sir" so the hc tells him "then you better wear the {censored} socks i bought you the way they are supossed to be worn." needless to say the socks were pulled up and some of us weren't there long.

WTF?
so i can't coach if i like to wear my socks low?
thats the dumbest sh*t i ever heard! btw its 2006 not 1946, i don't wear poly nut huggin shorts either, i guess thats another reason i can't coach, huh?
besides the point is that he was a control freak who regularly dressed down his coaches in front of kids.

If you're not wearing THESE then you're not COACHING!

I was given a pair of those poly shorts my first year and a shirt made of the same material. Niether were ever worn. But that was not a problem b/c 90% of the staff didn't wear them either.
I would have walked right off the practice field and never returned if a HC swore at me like that over socks.

I worked for a HC once and he said something to me in discussion that I quickly shared with the rest of my fellow assistant coaches....
"I don't want to sound egotistical, but I am Whitefish Bay football"
WTF?
To this day, when talking with those guys I coached with we somehow always manage to bring that quote into our conversations.
That guy is like the others you have mentioned....very full of himself. Does that happen to all who become head coaches?

my last HC would have flashbacks to when he was in football playing ...does that count as a power trip?

I try to be the opposite. All credit in wins goes to the kids and my assistants. If we lose I shoulder the blame. I have some great guys that I coach with. They do not "work for me" we work together to put a winner on the field. That is the way it should be.

We had one that is very moody, he is worse than a bus full of lesbians going to NOW convention.
The funny thing about him is how he tries to play the kids agnaist the other coaches. tells crap like "I am the only one who cares about you, I work harder for you than any other coach on staff." then on friday nights he is dog cussing the same kids for not playing well or doing what he coached them to do.
glad his ass got fired!!!

Brophy-
YES. Also same guy used to throw all the passes vs. our defense (we scout 3 games). That was a team that RAN the ball 80% of the time. Running didn't work, so let's chuck it. That is what the other team will do (we had seen them on film throw 2 times at the end of a half in a ballgame they were losing, but was close)

Brophy - we had some changes in staff this season and our offensive line coach retired, but came back as a volunteer. He organized the scout teams for us. The new offensive line coach was a guy who had been on staff the previous years and organized the scout teams. It wasn't long before the new scout team guy began to deviate from the script - walking LBs up, blitzing all over heck...the new offensive line guy looked at me and said "I'm so sorry for all the S*** I did like that for the past 4 years." He would get so pissed during team and he always apologized for doing the same thing when he was running the scout D.
Same guy organized the scout O and would draw stuff up in the dirt and say..."they used to run this play..." - yes, I'm sure they did, back in 1978 when you were just starting as an assistant, but now they are running out of the Gun now, not the 'bone...frustrating
