OK gentlemen here is our dilema. I coach at a 3A school in SC that has absolutely no history of winning. We are the team that every other team gets up to beat because noone wants to be the team to lose to us. We as a staff are entering our 4th year at the school and finally have the athletes and leadership that we have been lacking that are taking control and playing the way we know they can. We have started the season 3-0 and now we are ranked in the top 5 in our state's AP poll. Last week we were at 7 and now we are at 4. I am looking for guys who have been through this and what good ways have you found to keep your kids heads from being to large for their helmet and keep them on the path to their goals. Thanks.

You have to get them to see the big picture. I saw a pyramid that Jim Wacker used way back when--it had all the goals for the team and at the top of the pyramid was the championship. Along the way it had goals for yardage, key wins, conference and league standings, so on and so on. So while making the semifinals was a goal, it wasn't at the top. They can see the goals the whole way thru, but there's always a row above. The higher the rows go, the more it takes to achieve.
And then I think you tell them that if the regular season was 3 games long they'd be conference champs, but since it isn't, those 3 wins probably aren't enough to get them in the playoffs. Very few 3 win teams get in the playoffs.
As for rankings, they don't mean much.

Focus on the process and not the destination. You want to be region champs then you have to have great practices, every rep counts no slacking off, study scouting reports and watch film, take care of your grades stay on top of school. If as a staff you do that the kids will as well- don't talk about where you are ranked, who you've beaten or who's coming up. Focus on the day to day and this weeks opponent- do that and everything takes care of itself if you don't you cannot arrive at the destination.
