We just finished our off season and was wondering what some of you do to make leaders out of players that arent natural leaders. Ive heard of programs where players are drafted by their teammates and they have to keep track of what they do during the off-season. They would get points for doing positve things, such as honor roll, running track, or increasing their squat. Does anybody do anything like this and does it work?

what would be a good incentive to the kids that win?
just winning during the next football season itself? some of ours might not totally grasp that idea yet, might need something more tangible as for an incentive

T-shirts and pizza parties are what we've used in the past.
The upper classmen are responsible for tracking the attendence (calling) the underclassmen... We also have monthly meetings where an instructor teaches tenets of leadership to the kids that show up (early mornings).

brophy, we have a "captive" audience with an athletic period, t shirts that they get to wear the next season might be a good idea
gotta earn them

I'm just saying, as stated by other coaches before....T-Shirts are super cheap for us (adults) but for kids...there's something special about them (I guess)...did I mention that they are CHEAP?!

I don't know what others think on this, but one point we've tried to sell in the off-season the most, was not beating / outworking our rivals so much, but trying to sell the kids that their biggest, most feared opponent right now....was THEMSELVES.
They have to work harder than they did the day before - they cannot take a day off getting better (classroom / weight room / etc). Being lazy, being content with what you did last season, believing the hype, talking a big game, making excuses, etc was their biggest opponent in the off season. That EVERY player is fighting that same battle and that you cannot be satisfied with just YOU doing well today, because if your teammates aren't showing up, it will only hurt you come next season.
We ALWAYS struggle with numbers in the off-season....it's a real battle to get the kids in the weight room.

I like the idea of giving kids free sport gear. For example instead of them paying for the usual t shirt and shorts at the beginning of the year they would get them for free. I dont like the idea that some programs give different t-shirts for them reaching these goals. We are striving for unity, and them wearing different shirts doesnt do that job.
