What do you do about an assistant who is hell-bent on trying to get your job. He thinks he should be head coach and behind your back ruined the relationships you worked several seasons to build with the community and players by conning them with lies. Problem is some of the players and parents support this guy and want to see him get the job. Problem also is that he has corrupted a couple of your assistant coaches on staff into believing him too. They have now joined a camp trying to get me fired. I can fire all of them but then have to rebuild a staff from scratch. But if I do not cut off the the cancer it will infect everyone else sooner or later.

Coach -
I think that you answered your own question...get rid of the guy! Nothing good can come of trying to make it work. The guy is a cancer and will try and sandbag you at every turn.
What are his specific complaints? Who does the administration back?

the sooner you fire him the sooner you can get back to work on re-establishing your program.
Hang in there coach.

Id have a meeting and find out why the staff isnt supportive...maybe they think you are disorganized or undermotivated or a poor communicator... maybe they hate your system or leadership skills?...open and honest communication may save the relationship....also you can find out if you are just being paranoid or if they are really out to get you fired. ....then id fire them lol.
no, seriously, if you have detailed expectations and coaching contracts that include thing such as "i vow to do whatever is best for the program, being loyal to my head coach, assistants and the kids...etc etc etc..."..those things can really go along way to protecting yourself from these things. tell ya what, i have been in two spots where parents, youth staff and players tell me that they want me to be the head coach...its rough, that doesnt mean im lobbying to do that even though it might seem so. id be sure before you fire anyone.

I would have a hard time not kicking their ass. I would go a coach short if I had too, but this sorry p.o.s. would not be working for me under any cirumstances.

nah, you are missing the fine nuances of coaching here, ..ask for a reassignment as an assistant and let him take the reigns, but have admin make you the AHC so he cant fire you , and then repay him. No that would be funny.

The longer you wait, the bigger problem it becomes. Unconditional loyalty must be demanded. Assistant coaches can NEVER say even one negative word about you or your program outside of your coaching family.
Fire them, and make it clear why they are being fired. You don't even need to be nice about it.

I agree with the point about never saying anything bad. I have coached in other programs and privately thought I would do it a different way, and even privately asked the head coach why he does it "that way". But never once outside that private meeting...even with other assistants said or done anything to sabbotage the program. In the military you get court marshalled for such activity I believe. So I would can thier sorry you know whats. Then those who want to follow you will. Fire them for not supporting the program and being subversive. Good luck.

Fire them. There is no way back for guys like these.
Loyalty is the backbone of any football program and you haven't got it with people like these on your staff.
These guys are done as coaches. When you get a call from their next potential head coach and he asks you why you fired him then he probably won't hire them. If he does then they'll do the same thing to him that they did to you.
If you can trust your principal and AD then go and talk to them and tell them what you're doing. If they try to talk you out of it then they're in on it too. Then pull the trigger on the disloyal bastards.

Code--when the time comes you could just not offer them a contract. Do it quietly. If these guys are as big of liars and cheaters as you say...well in my experience it is hard to fight a public fight with liars because the fools (parents) don't know who to listen to. You could just troll along and when the time comes dump them. It is not what I would do, but it is an option.

With assistants like that, who needs a proctologist?!?
Fire him. I know that's easy for me to say b/c it will never be that simple, but based on the details you stated, you must fire him. You implied that you don't want to rebuild, but it doesn't sound like you can do much worse.
Hang in there, coach.
