What are your thoughts on what states pay their teachers and coaches the best?? What about Tennessee?

some head football coaches in Texas get paid very very well
asst coaches (who 99% of have classes to teach) make a state base salary based on their years, and then districts add on top of the state base what they can for teaching, then each school district has different coaching stipends

Nebraska doesn't pay well on a national scale... but you have to factor in the cost of living. I talked with a lot of coaches from TX and IL at the All-American Bowl this past January... most with similar positions as myself do have higher salaries, but have a lot higher house payments, etc. When you get down to it, there is not much difference really. You can buy a nice house for $40,000-50,000 here (and you can buy a livable house for $9000)... It is all relative really. Comparing with my experience in Colorado- CO paid more money, but I have a lot more $ monthly after paying bills here.

typically southern states pay less then the midwest, however the cost of living is a whole lot different in tenn then it is where i am from on the il/wi border. I would say what ever you do, do not live in a suburb. either live in town or live in the rural.
the further you get away from cities, the less homes are and the districts can pay less or they can be competitive.
alot could change to when the bust comes to the housing market. going to be a lot of hurting people then.

New York pays very low for coaching though. If you're not a teacher, your coaching check won't be much. And just like senatorblutarsky said, it's all relative. 9000 will buy you a house in Nebraska, in NYC thats 3 months rent

michigan schools pay well, but good luck keeping a job. Several schools are laying off up to 17 teachers. School funding in this state is messed up.

Coach Mallory, we are going through the same thing here in Minnesota. Cutting teachers at an alarming rate. Class sizes are going up and the number of administrators continue to rise. Your right, it is messed up.

THE NEVADA COACHING PAY IS CRAPPY ! THE COST OF LIVING IS RIDICULOUS!! THE MAYOR OF LAS VEGAS WAS ON TV TODAY ANNOUNCING PLANS TO BUILD A 15 STORY CONDO COMPLEX IN THE "REVITALIZED" PART OF TOWN. HE WANTS TEACHERS TO LIVE THERE. HE FORGOT TO MENTION THAT 2 BEDROOM CONDOS ARE GOING FOR $400,000.

Coach Mallory, we are going through the same thing here in Minnesota. Cutting teachers at an alarming rate. Class sizes are going up and the number of administrators continue to rise. Your right, it is messed up. wisconsin is having the same problem. administrative pay is skyrocketed. small towns are paying there supers 6 figures. my principal makes 100,000. our do nothing AD make s 82,000. the highest paid teacher is 62,000 and that is after 15 yrs of service with a masters plus 22 credits. admin pay has doubled in the last 10 to 15 yrs. it is killing wisconsin public schools, while teacher pay has been level and man, they are taking it to our custodians. one thing about minnesota thought is you can go on strike. wisconsin you cannot go on strike.

South Dakota doesn't pay well at all but we have a low cost of living, smaller class sizes, really good kids and parents, and the football isn't too bad either, at least at the level I coach at, don't know much about the smaller levels.

I'm in SoCal, have a BA plus 45 units. In my 5th year of teaching...
$48,000/yr plus $3200 for football...(no summer or spring pay, some schools do from the district or boosters).
Houses cost between $300,000 to $999,000+, depending on how far from the beach. Oh yeah, the wife needs to make a lot of money!!!!!!!!
