Just remember, when you eat a banana, always bring the banana to your mouth, never your mouth to the banana. Never make eye contact with anybody either... Ha!

I very much believe there needs to be an end of the year awards for this website; most helpful coach, most divisive post, etc. (we can call them the Hueys)
If there were, this would be my nominee for "Most Fun Thread of the Year"

I know I wouldn’t win that award, but man, I would get rings and everything made if I did. It definitely would go on my resume.

My first year coaching MS ball a guy on staff literally ate chili cheese nachos during a game. On the sideline, not in the box.
One time during a JV game we were ahead something like 61-0 (yes you read that right) shortly before half time.
JV DC sent a kid to concession stand to get him two chili cheese hot dogs.
He wasn't a teacher, gave up his two weeks' vacation to coach during Two-a-Days.
Didn't get out of work in time for Pre-Game meal.
So although we gave him good-natured grief about it, all things considered it was just funny, not blasphemy.
FWIW they won 74-0, so he still pitched a shutout with cheese-chili on his pullover in 2nd Half.
This is why I call our games from the box. When guys are wondering what's in that backpack I take with me...food. Lots and lots of food. Also a Mountain Dew.

What variety of pear?
I go only for Bartletts but my friend here thinks they're too sour & prefers Boscs. I don't think I could coach w someone who eats Anjous or Comices, let alone those red or more exotic ones.
Bartlett pears just seem to go w football. They get all bruised, they're not so sweet, but they pour out the juice when you bite their head off.

you need to copyright Power of the Pear and protest pear, I got a feeling this is going to be the next big thing this offseason
Maybe there is a deeper meaning behind all this. Through the use of pear pressure, he is trying to convey his dissatisfaction with the program

My OC in HS always had a pear before practice. He and the HC were a little separate philosophically, but they made it work. The OC was a younger guy, and he would eat almonds as he was calling plays during team O occasionally. This post has made me realize that he was protesting my entire career.

Thanks for bringing this back. Somehow, I missed it the first time. I'm surprised that nobody asked the question that first popped into my mind: Bosc, Bartlett, or red pear?
Some of the replies reminded me of a cross-country coach that I knew who once, as he was sending his kids off on a run, gave a kid money and told him to stop at 7-11 and get him a hot dog and a coke.
Personally, I'd never eat fruit at practice. Not because I think it's unprofessional but because I WOULD have to miss some practice after my old man's gut sent me running to the head.

The level of not caring what people thought from this guy must have been astounding 😂😂😂 yeah I love people who don't GAF had a kid in my class like 3 years ago who was this long haired kid that always wore AC/DC or Iron Maiden shirts....so the first time I cut them loose to work on something he says "can we listen to our music?" and I say yes...again this is 3 years ago kid pulls out from his backpack a straight up sony discman and a case logic full of CD's......pop's in an Alice n' Chains CD and puts the headphone on.......kid was awesome I asked if he had a smart phone and he said his parents bought him one but he just leaves it at home because he doesn't see the point, like's the sound of the CD's better and already has them so why buy the music over again, had a girl in there middle of the year told him he should get snapchat so she could add him....he deadpans to her "no, but I think your're cute we can hang out if you want"....they started dating immediately....just an all around savage Reviewing this thread, and this specific post, many years later makes me proud as a father. My son, currently a senior, is a huge AIC fan and has taken to bumping CDs a lot lately. We joke that he better hide his CD case when leaves it in his car, as he doesn't want someone to be tempted to break in and steal them.

I coached with a guy for a long time who would show up late most days, hop the chain link fence to the practice field, finish eating an apple, and launch that apple core like he was throwing somebody out at home plate from right field.
Then he'd go coach his DBs, but that part probably didn't need to be said haha.

I ate a protein bar every day during warm-ups when I was an HC. Can't have a coach being a hangry diva.

This reminds me a bit of a game a few years back when I was in the box...as the second half was getting ready to kick off one of the freshmen players came into the box with a burger and chips for one our DL coach. Apparently he had gave him some cash at halftime because he needed a snack.

Not gonna lie, we were playing against a bigtime team in our area a few years ago. They have like a 3 story pressbox. They were killing us at halftime, so we stopped off at the Booster level and made a plate. Made the 2nd half, not quite as bad.

I've told this one before
In a game that got out of hand early, like we were up 35-0, two minutes into the game and had only run 9 offensive plays; lead 56 nothing at half and kneed out the clock on their 20 to end the half.
I actually went back up to the top (like on top of the press box) b/c we were going to play the back ups so I was there to help spot troubles.
3rd quarter started and I noticed the other team's coach didn't come back up and thought, "Oh, well I probably wouldn't come back up either"
About half way through the 3rd quarter he comes up with a plate of nachos, 2 hotdogs, and big drink and he proceeded to chow down.
But that wasn't the best part; how he was able to get back up on top with all that was besides me. It was one of those press box set ups where both sets of coaches and the camera guys were on top of the press box roof. And the only way to access the roof was to climb a ladder up the back of the stands.... about 3 stories high.

2nd round of the playoffs and we're winning like 35-0 in the 3rd, but can't get the clock running. 2nd half took forever because of that and eventually we pull our starters. JV gives up 2 TDs, fireworks, train whistles all the BS ensues. I'm a little grumpy post game because of the other team, not my kids.
Anyway, next morning we're watching the fim and it's about halfway through the 3rd quarter. The press box we're filming in has a window that wouldn't open, so there's a little reflection. At this point I realize our booth guy's eating a sandwich. I go "Coach Shay, are you eating a sandwich?" To which he replies. "Hell ya I am. And that {censored} was good too!"

Now that we've had our fun I'll tell you what I really think.
It may not be professional to eat at practice but, strictly speaking, that coach is not a professional. A true professional- a coach whose full-time paying job is coaching football- wouldn't eat a pear at practice because he wouldn't need to. He wouldn't have to drive to practice from his mortgage-paying day job.
Yeah, we should act professionally on the field but sometimes you do have to make allowances.

I can't remember all the details because it was told me me by another coach, but during an NAIA game a few years ago one of the opposing coordinators full-on went to a McDonald's across the street during halftime and came back with lunch.

Several years back a inner city team was paid to come to a school down the round both years of home and home series... the only person in the stands for the inner city team was the bus driver... it was a hot August game...at half time their coach went to the concession stand and got an ice cream cone. came walking back across field to sidelines licking away lol he did finish it before the 2nd half started.
