Long time assistant gets to practice late most days (because of school times) and when he is on the field coaching eats a pear every day during practice. Would this be ok in your program?

hahahahahahahahahahaha.....how long does he eat the pear? like for an hour or just real quick? does he coach while eating the pear or just hang out and eat the pear and then coach? Are ya'll a spread team or split back veer? Too many variables, I suppose there is a flippancy about it, like "I'm going to just eat this here pear because I'm not that into the job" or maybe he coaches his ass off through the power of pear.......I need more details

Long time assistant gets to practice late most days (because of school times) and when he is on the field coaching eats a pear every day during practice. Would this be ok in your program? Just all depends. If he is late because of school times, that is out of his control. We do warmups, conditioning, specialty, and 2 special teams at the beginning of practice. As long as he isn't missing his duties and it is out of his control, being late isn't a big deal. Eating a pear? Is there possibly a medical condition or something? Does it take just a couple of minutes? Is it during break? Does he maybe miss lunch in his schedule so that he can make football practice or skip afternoon duties at his school, so he is hungry? In other words, all of that by itself is probably not a big deal AT ALL. But, my guess is that these two things are an overall reflection of this particular coach's work habits and the staff's work habits and probably the team's work habits and overall culture. Did I guess correctly?

I can't imagine telling a grown man when he can and cannot eat. As long as he is doing his job I am fine with it. If he isn't doing his job it's probably a bigger issue than the pear.

flexbone takes about 10 minutes to eat , in the middle of practice, could eat on the walk to practice field or drive over but waits till on the field. I like the power of the pear!

Yes, why wouldn't it be? Is it preventing him from coaching? Is he leaving the core on the field? I'd rather he eat a pear than spit sunflower seeds everywhere or chew tobacco.

like drinking a coffee during practice, just not something I think is professional. I could see a visor guy doing something like this....one of those guys that stands on the sidelines most of the practice and is upset that that the HC doesn't listen to any of his ideas...eats his pear and talks way to familiar with the kids...."for sure bro if I was calling the plays we'd be feeding you that rock" but you said long time assistant which means that this is a guy who has been around and knows the deal, maybe he's frustrated with the direction of the program and its a protest pear.....either way this is a big issue that definitely needs to get sorted out...I never seen a guy drink coffee at practice either but that would be weird too....I think if he wears a tank top and does all of this you gotta fire him for cause

I like the power of the pear! fired then it's about the attitude of your team...if you're flex bone the only things coaches can eat on the field is raw organ meat or Red Man chew, go ahead and eat pears if you want to be the kind of team that punts on 4th and 1

One time a coach brought a bottle of Mountain Dew out to practice. I think he even took a drink out of it while his players ran to get water during a break.

Would anyone's opinion change if he was eating an ice cream cone or a hot dog? Is a slice of pizza ok?

Would anyone's opinion change if he was eating an ice cream cone or a hot dog? Is a slice of pizza ok? How about other activities? What if he was smoking cigarettes during practice? Is the action taking away from practice? Is it distracting the kids or hindering the coach's ability to do his job? I think these are really the main questions in these scenarios. I've seen coaches eat during practice and never thought anything of it; usually something small like candy or a piece of fruit. Didn't inhibit their coaching or take away from practice. Especially during a session they might not be as involved in (Specials, Warm-up/stretch, etc) and they are not in the middle of everything, I don't think its a big deal.

I can see why the original poster doesn't like it though, it's not something you can put your finger on but it just seems flippant, like when you have a class rule that you can't flip bottles, so a kid start rolling it around the desk, and when you ask him to stop he says "what? what?...you said we can't flip it didn't say anything about not rolling it"......that kind of thing..I've never met this pear-eater and likely won't but I can tell ya right now I'm not a fan, besides who just eats a pear in the first place? It's not exactly in the upper echelon of hand held fruits, a good granny smith apple or a banana does the job just fine, feels like the pear is just being over the top, like "not only am I going to eat at practice, I'm going to eat this way too juicy fruit where the stem breaks off really easily"

It seems like the bigger issue is he's late (though maybe the reason is understandable), and the pear is somehow the cherry on top? I agree with the poster that said I'd rather see a guy eat a pear than dip. I do have a funny visual in my head of some guy like standing off to the side with his eyes closed just really -- really -- enjoying a pear.

if he isnt doing his job then fire him, you guys obviously have not been hit with the coaching shortage like we have around here, as long as he is not licking syrup off someone and can do a decent job of coaching he would be fine around here

Eating a pear might be better than having a big plug of Red Man and spitting all over practice field or pulling out a flask from time to time.

I get where you're coming from, it's just one of those little irritating things that for some reason just bugs the mess out of you. For me personally, as long as he's doing the job and it's not interfering or a distraction, I say pear away. If it interferes or is a distraction (other than a running joke in the coaches office), then I say down with the pear!

While reading this I kept picturing the older guy on our staff. He's retired but this would so fit him.

My first year coaching MS ball a guy on staff literally ate chili cheese nachos during a game. On the sideline, not in the box.

My first year coaching MS ball a guy on staff literally ate chili cheese nachos during a game. On the sideline, not in the box.
One time during a JV game we were ahead something like 61-0 (yes you read that right) shortly before half time.
JV DC sent a kid to concession stand to get him two chili cheese hot dogs.
He wasn't a teacher, gave up his two weeks' vacation to coach during Two-a-Days.
Didn't get out of work in time for Pre-Game meal.
So although we gave him good-natured grief about it, all things considered it was just funny, not blasphemy.
FWIW they won 74-0, so he still pitched a shutout with cheese-chili on his pullover in 2nd Half.
