We have normally been after pre game meal the kids go to their locker room and on are on their own a bit before the game. We have had some issues during that time with the kids goofing off. Just curious if any of you do meetings during that time? And if you feel like it helps or hurts concentration or gets them out of their routine?

What age of kids? Can you watch film?
We usually have a "Clap Session" where we go and run through our best plays for that game. Usually 10 offense, 10 defense and go over all of special team call outs. Takes maybe 20 min.

It was get taped, report to gym, clap session, get dressed. Great way to get them focused IMO Where we are at now we meet. I think it's meeting just for the sake of meeting, but it does help. I think film would be ideal.

Home games we have about 2 hours where they are getting taped or just hanging out in the lock room. I initially thought it would be a good time to watch some special teams tape as we don't get a lot of that anyways. Why do you call it "clap session" and just not film?

What is a "Clap Session"? For us, QB would call a cadence. On go, everybody would clap and point to their assignment / path. Just a way to get kids to focus up a bit.

For us, we call and run the play, then on "ready, ready" everyone claps and we go to the next play. You could use any command word or motto to have them clap after. Just something to get the brain and body working together.

We had a volleyball tournament going on at the school. Apparently all the teams had laid out snacks on assigned tables in the courtyard outside of our locker room. Our kids took a box of fruit roll ups from one of the tables.

We don't have anything organized between when school lets out at 3:10 and our team meal at 4. If something like this happened we'd give them some serious punishment on Monday and warn them not to do it again.

For a 7pm game, this is basically our schedule. 3:00pm - School let's out 3:15pm-3:30pm Short team meeting, sometimes a guest/alumni speaker 3:30pm-4:00pm Team meal in cafeteria 4:15pm Special Teams Walk Thru on Field 4:30pm Varsity Pre-Game Lift/JV Practice or Walk thru 5:00pm Position Meetings with Film in classrooms 5:30pm Get taped 5:55pm Specialists to Field 6:00pm-6:40pm Typical Pre-Game 7:00pm kick off Obviously, we adjust some things for away games. Normally, we will cut out Position Meetings and/or Lifting to accommodate for travel depending on distance. We've been doing this since at least 2011. It makes for a long day for coaches, since we arrive at school around 6:30am, but we haven't had any problems. The kids are used to (and like) the routine. It works for us.

We lift, give them food, do a walk through and then we tell them to lay down and sleep. We will open up our library for them and also our wrestling room. Coaches will walk around and peak in from time to time to make sure no horsing around is going on. Depending on the game they can get anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour of good rest and reflection time. Then we will bring them together for a meeting and some words then dress and go time.

It is a relief of tension. Its OK to get your mind away from the pressure for a little while.

Curious to what kind of lifting you are doing before the game? Our kids complain when we lift the day before the game.

Typically, it will consist of some light bench, shoulder exercises, light weight cleans. We do lots of movements with just the bar. We aren't doing anything high intensity, max-out-style lifting. One of our coaches played at Oregon during the early Chip Kelly era, so we emulate some of their stuff.

We've adjusted our schedule with meetings so that they don't have any long periods of time on game day. We used to give blocks of free time and put our meetings pretty close together. After coming to a new school where there wasn't a lot of structure, I found out the kids couldn't handle the free time in the locker room. We made adjustments to meeting schedule and it helped.

Players usually have an hour or so after school on their own. We will start taping a few hours before the game and meetings are about an hour and a half before the game.

I have been in programs that do Pre Game meals, followed by pre game meetings, followed by pre game films, followed by clap session, followed by walk the field, followed by tape, followed by all the normal pregame stuff. Its too much
I get trying to keep kids out of trouble, but there is a point of negative returns in which we just overload the kids and take up all their time. Gotta find the balance or else we become helicopter coaches.

There's no ideal situation here. You have to find the right balance between keeping them focused yet not too tight. I think a film session for an hour border lines on keeping them too tight. I struggle with this every year too.
