Anyone have documentation on player to coach ratio in football? I am trying to get another paid coach on my staff for next year and need to back up my argument with some valid facts. We have 150 players from frosh on up and I have 7 assistants plus myself. Thanks for your help.

When I was at a school that had around 110-120 kids out, we had 10 asst. coaches and I was the 11th (HC).

Our district tries to keep a 10 to 1 ratio.

Coach, What is the situation in your district or league? It would probably be more convincing if you had how many coaches some of your competitors had. Just a thought.

coach,
at one time I thought I had seen something from the AFCA about a ratio. I cannot remember exactly what it was, but it was something like 12:1 or 15:1??? You may want to call the AFCA? Go to their website and find a contact number afca.org
I know when it comes to the number of coaches the schools in our conference always compare with each other.
Good luck

10 to one varsity and 12 or 15 to one JV, frosh, or youth leagues for best results. I don't see how you could get good quality and enough reps with one coach and more than 15 players in a drill or station.

The '05 season we had an 9 to 1 ratio( 4 coaches). Next year with the hire of 2 additional coaches it should be around 6 to 1 (6 coaches).

At middle school level (Jr. High)....we have a 22.5 ratio! We can not run them off even though it is a very structured program which requires and demands a lot from our kids. I have 8 coaches counting myself and thank goodness I have a building principal who believes in the value of athletics within the school system....as a former OC and HC she might be the best administrator I have worked under! I know these ratios are high compared to what are going on at HS across the state and nation but without a doubt I am fortunate in our athletic program in having coaches who have not only athletic periods but also are free to work with our kids after school.
Any young coaches out there I will be more than happy to give my insight on what it takes to move up....in the last 5 years I have had several who have either moved up within our district or outside the district to become head coaches in other sports or as assistants at the HS level. Trust me that is what allows me to keep my sanity after 14+ years at the HS level.
