Years of neglect have mounted up at the new school. New HC comes in starts trying to put in a winning or at least playing hard mentality, and we as a staff are struggling. The biggest thing is that we are missing two classes of players. These players have either moved to other schools, or will not come out because the program has been a joke for so long. It is already a small school, and we graduate more than half our roster at the end of the school year. This creates problems when it comes to scout team especially. Despite our issues with numbers, the kids we have simply have to play hard for us to have success, however, we are now half-as**** in our scrimmages because the scout team we have is so awful and young that they don't have to do anything to block them. We use our sled every day using the De La Salle sled progression. Dbs are having trouble covering WRs who can run under a 5.4 second 40. We can have success here, but our players are not getting quality reps at practice.
I saw an article years ago that showed Alabama bringing back Trent Richardson to be a scout team running back for a week to simulate a running back they were playing. I could potentially get some former players, and even a few of the college aged volunteers to use some shields and protections to get us a decent look. It sounds so unprofessional, but we are looking at a program that some success may save the program itself.
Thoughts???

You thought about going half line? Tried it, Good on good still not playing up to par. They all play high, and right now the biggest struggle is they do not understand it isnt acceptable because on a friday night the other team actually wants to stop you.

I know this will sound crazy, turn practice into a rehersal.
Hit bags on offense. Full speed. Heck, even video tape it. Have to step right, hit the bag in the right place, shoulders, hands, feet, speed, etc, all have to be right. Finish the block, wide base, leg drive. Backs have to be full speed, ball high and tight, fake, get through the hole and make a cut. Then line up and run the play again or go to next play. You will get tons of reps this way.
Bag holders do need to be coached a little. They need to move and play technique like the other team to simulate. Come up field or read blocks or slant. Wrong shoulder or box, etc. But don’t be a jerk, simulate, token resistance, and the get blocked.
For offense, this is all we do nowadays.
For defense, get the scout team to run the play right and make sure everyone does their job instead of worrying about stopping the play. You can be thud. It does no one any good for your best d lineman against a crappy o lineman to just make every play in practice because that helps no one. Make sure everyone “fits” right. Film this also.
Your scout team will gradual start to get better also. They will also get better each week simulating the other team. Make sure they watch film and are instructed on what to do. Monday walk thru plays. Tuesday run them. By Wednesday, they should be giving some kind of decent look.

That's a different situation than having a bad scout team. That is just bad execution. Granted you will always struggle if the overall talent level is subpar, because those subpar kids will be going "good on good" vs other subpar kids. But if you went half line, and still got bad looks, then you have a pride and execution problem.

School had won 1 game in four years prior to the new staff we have now.

You bring back any old players and have them run scout not only is your a in a sling if someone gets hurt, in our state that can make your team ineligible.

A school in our state got sanctioned a few years ago for hiring a former All State and college RB to come in and play on their scout team. I'm pretty sure the HC and some of the staff got fired for allowing this. I've heard of this happening at a few places and they got away with it, along with doing all sorts of other shady stuff, but it's not worth the risk.

Alabama can do it because those players are still enrolled and taking classes at Alabama.

I put where the play is going when for the defense scouting for our offense and also have put in the run fits for the scout linebackers.

We have 34 kids this year, last year we had 53. We have the numbers to run a scout team but the quality isn't where it needs to be. We started going half-line this week and we're seeing a WORLD of difference in the quality of looks. We play a full scout O versus a half D. Run plays to both sides and force the defense to pursue because we have had piss-poor pursuit in practice and week one.
Hoping tomorrow we see the fruits of this new experiment.
