I decided to create an awards system for my players this season. I want to give out player of the week awards, and helmet stickers. Unfortunately, there is a difference of opinion between the coaching staff on the awards system.
Some think that awards should not be given during losses, others think that the individual performance should still be recognized, even in a loss.
What are your opinions and why?

We had POW awards and only gave them out in weeks we won. However the scout team POW was awarded weekly no matter what.

I believe that certain ones you can tie into a win, but not all of them. If they're all tied into a win, then what happens to the program when you have a below .500 season? That's not what we want to think about, but if you're trying to build a program and keep kids motivated no matter what, you can't tie all rewards into wins. Some kids will give up if they're down at the half, thinking that these rewards are now all off the table. Right or wrong, that's my .02

JMHO of course, but if you institute an award system you should use it, win or lose.
Even in a losing effort, someone still did an excellent job and that should be recognized.

Sure you can find someone that did good stuff even in a loss. If you only want it to be weeks you win call it player of the win not week... Not sure what the situation is where you coach but if you aren't winning much the award seems to loose some value and if it is that type of situation giving the kids a bit of positivity even in a loss can help increase the enthusiasm of the team.

Maybe it’s just the kids I coach....but I think those types of awards should only be given after loses.
With that being said, we give them out after every game.

I am not that big of a fan of Spurrier generally, but I like how he thinks about "being tough on your team when things are going well, and be more supportive when things aren't". I have been on teams where we have barely been able to scrape by, we were out matched a lot of times and did not have great numbers. In that situation I would not remove another motivating factor.
If we are a winning team. and I hear anything in the line of: "If we loose at least it's not my fault" or see anybody play the blame game, then I might remove the individual awards to show that we win and lose as a team.
It's tough though, it all depends on your coaching philosophy, player situation, history and process IMO.

We do not give out awards when we lose. That being said, I think it is perfectly acceptable to commend those who had outstanding performances. Helps to reiterate that even in a losing effort there are people giving it their all and maybe if we had more kids performing like Kid A we could have won that game.

I used to work for a good principal that said you get what you emphasize. I tend to believe it’s true so we are giving awards every week.
Our defensive philosophy is bring the heat. Hustle, effort, attitude, tenacity. I give an award certificate and a bag of hot Cheetos every week to 4 players one for each of those attributes. I find a play in practice or game film that shows a player doing something as an example of it. I also give a payday candy bar for a takeaway. The actual awards are silly but for me it goes back to you get what you emphasize and the more opportunities I get to recognize and reinforce the things I am looking for the better.
