I have a playoff game on 10-20-06 at 7:00PM. We do not have school on that friday.
Any suggestions for that day's schedule?

take the kids to the local kids hospital/old people's home, then a light lunch, then to the movies. that should put you into your normal pre-game routine.

Whatever you do, do not let them sleep in until noon. I would suggest a team breakfast or something around 8:30 or 9.

We had a game on a no-school day a couple weeks ago. We brought the team in after lunch and showed them a movie in the auditorium. It ended about the time school is usually out so we went into our regular pre-game schedule then. One thing we heard from the kids is that by not having to get up for school they slept late and laid around most of the morning and felt kind of sluggish that afternoon and it took them a while to get going. If we come across that again we may find something to bring them in for a little while in the morning just to keep their bodies on the same schedule.

In that situation I like to hold a walk-through practice around 8:30 or 9:00 in the morning.

I agree on not letting them sleep in but we start our schedule at 10:30 AM with stretching and a "pre-game" without pads. They still get to sleep in a little and the day is not sooooo long as to get them bored. We try to mix it up from year to year with our activites, including showing a movie and having an XBOX tournament to playing laser tag / paintball or visiting local colleges and checking out the faciities, coaches, etc. The day off from school provides a great opportunity for team building for the evening's game and beyond.

I am mixed on what approach to take. I want the kids to sleep in a little. Get up about 9 o'clock or so and get some breakfast. But, I tell them a nap in the afternoon may not be bad for them. The day will be terribly wrong if they are around each other the whole time.
When I was a player, I usually had to get up early to do chores. So, I didn't get to sleep in. However, I did take an afternoon nap and I felt great for those games. The nap made the day go faster and made me more energetic.

We have a huge game this week with no school for the entire week. We are on some modified year-round/traditional schedule. Our plan is to have them in the weight room at 7:00 am and back at 3:00 for our normal practice time. As far as Friday, I like the suggestion of an early morning walkthrough and then maybe a movie. We will meet for our team meal as usual. Then get on the bus. You definitely don't want them staying up until 2:00 in the morning the night before thinking they can sleep in and catch up. It sucks. Anyway you cut it getting kids out of their regular routine is tough.
