Not entirely related to football, although I am a firm believer that track is the best 2nd sport for football players. I am the Head Track Coach at my school and during track season I take it every bit as serious as I do football during football season.
So, we have the best team in school history and at a meet a couple of weeks ago our starting OLB (who also plays baseball) also runs the 2nd leg on the 4x100 and runs out of his lane after handing off and bumps a runner and we get DQd. We end up finishing 2nd overall at the meet by a point. I think to myself, "this kid is a space cadet, I need to move him to anchor so that way he will just be involved in one exchange. I mean, just take the baton and run straight, how can you screw that up?"
We work on the 4x100 all week and have our exchanges down pat, looking good and ready to run at a huge meet with over 35 teams there. My entire focus for the meet was this relay, we are so ready.
The gun goes off and we get great exchanges on the first 2 handoffs and are in great shape, and then we get to the anchor. He takes off late, which happens sometimes. But then I look and see he is running with his baseball hat on backwards and about 40 meters into it he reaches up and takes it off and tosses it off the track. Then he ran as tight as a drum and his split was awful because he was fiddling with his hat while running.
So I'm hot, and I walk over there to figure out why the kid had his hat on, assuming he'd forgot he had it on.
Me: Son, why in the world did you wear that hat? Did you forget to take it off? Kid: No. I like this hat. Me: (incredulous) What? Kid: Yeah, I wore it during the pole vault.

We had the Fat Man 4x100 relay we'd put together with all of the throwers, who happened to also all be 220+ lb offensive linemen. That was always a blast to watch.

So that same kid at the District meet takes off like 10 meters too soon and we go from first to fourth because of it. Ugh.
