This has always bothered me! Does anyone know WHY we call a 7 technique a 7 and not a 6i? Going on my 29th year of coaching and I would just like to know why. We won't change anything but I would like a history lesson. Anybody know for sure or just guessers like us?

i always thought it was because when bum phillips was making up the numbers by the time he got outside to the TE he had had a few too many brews

I learned it the straight 0-9 out as you go... for us its 0s or 0w for Center shades.

I know that some pro schemes teach everything as an even number with either an I or O attached for inside or outside. Example: 4i or 4o.

we call the outside TE a "7" in our defense.....even though all us coaches know it to be the "9" technique (still have to catch myself when talking with the kids)....
We did that just to stay consistent with the players along the line (didn't want to make it more confusing for new kids).
even is head up odds are outside inside shades are designated with an "i"
Our linebackers are the same with an extra digit (off the line) ~ "10" or "40" tech.

Bucky, I am a guesser also. I have been teaching 0 shade - 1 2 3 - 4i 4 5 - 7 8 9 forever and every year the kids look at me, ask me why there is no six and I tell them I don't know!

Head up on center = 0 Shade on c = 1 head up to inside on g w/ inside gap responsibility =2 head up to outside on g w/ outside gap resp. = 3 head up to inside on t w/ inside gap resp.=4 head up to outside w/ outside gap resp. = 5 head up on te w/ inside gap resp.=6 inside shade of te w/ inside gap resp. = 7 outside shade of te w/ outside gap resp. = 9 outside of te w/ outside resp. = 8 I learned it this way about 35 years ago , I had the same question about the 7 tech . I believe it might have something to do with the de's allignment and responsibilities when there is no te.
