I would like to hear other coaches practice plans from M-F (high school) that works for them. Be detailed about your defensive and offensive segments and what you focus on in each part.

we are in the process of restructign ours. Listened to the head coach from the Univ. of South Dakota last weekend and he talked about mixing high impact drills and low impact drills during the practice sessions. In fact they do the majority of their hitting at the begginning of practice when the players are fresh and not tired. He said the NCAA study that came out on football injuries indicated that 70% of injuries that happen during practice happen at the end of practice when the players are tired.
I think our staff is going to drive down and visit USD or his former OC who helped design this type of practice tempo and have them help us design a solid practice structure that incorperates these principals for high school football and 2 way players.

JD--Where is their former OC? I remember one of their coaches saying it was one of the MIAC schools (Gustaphus or Macalaster?).

Helmets and shorts exclusively for practice. Sure does make sense to get the hitting done early, and do the mental stuff when they are tired. Should help cut down 'tired mistakes' come game time.

I also agree with the idea of hitting early. But I also question how well of a team are you in terms of tackling in the 4th quarter? When you're tired? Shouldn't you also work on that? Just asking b/c we were not very good at tackling in the 4th quarter.

why not work your tackling stations later in practice? Does not have to be full go, can be at 3/4 speed working on correct fundamentals when they are tired. I don't think the idea was to eliminate all contact at the end of practice, but to put the heavy work load at the early part of practice and reduce the amount of full contact at the later part of practice.
